• Meghan Trainor, "Mom"

Trust I was shattered to learn that while I might in fact have a mom, she's surely not on the level of Meghan Trainor's! Even tho from all the lyrical detail we're given it sure seems like they do ... a lot of the same things for us.

It makes me sad to spend any part of my weekend running content analysis on MTrain songs, but the recurring sentiments along the lines of the above, "if -I was YoU, I'd wAnna be me t,oo

" etc. makes me think her brand of self-empowerment doesn't come from the healthiest place
Oh well!

• YG, "She Wish She Was"

On one hand it's one of the best productions on one of the best-produced albums of the year, but on the other ..... boy. Misogyny in rap is still a problem obv but ultimately one I'm often able to somewhat look past (if not forgive) when the music is too undeniable. But in the context of what's otherwise one of the most non-sexual mainstream rap projects in recent memory, devoting a whole song to the topic of trying to justify it like a pseudoscience is what leaves a bad taste in my mouth, + one that's much harder to shake.

• Calvin Harris f/ Rihanna, "THIS Is What You Came For?"

No; the longest, most uneventful chorus of the year is not what I came for + I want my 3 minutes back

I remember dragging "mom" myself when I first heard it. The skit is the corniest thing of the year. YG's track surely does have its problematic lyrics but it's still a production highlight. I think TIWYCF is alright but it is pretty plain.
