Old Tour Grosses (Britney, Madonna, Beyonce, Gaga)
Since old tour grosses, even when inflation is accounted for, are difficult to compare to newer tours so I calculated some of ATRL's fave's older tour grosses by accounting for average wage and average concert ticket price inflation (credits to MJDangerous from UKMIX and www.statisticbrain.com) rather than standard inflation.
Quote:
Average price of concert ticket in 2012: $85.93
Average price of concert ticket in 2011: $86.4
Average price of concert ticket in 2010: $64.67
Average price of concert ticket in 2009: $62 (Gaga, ha power)
Average price of concert ticket in 2008: $67.33
Average price of concert ticket in 2006: $61.58
Average price of concert ticket in 2004: $53.55
Average price of concert ticket in 2003: $50.35
Average price of concert ticket in 2002: $46.56
Average price of concert ticket in 2001: $43.86
Average price of concert ticket in 2000: $43.75
Average price of concert ticket in 1999: $36.56
Average price of concert ticket in 1997: $29.81
Average price of concert ticket in 1996: $25.81
Average price of concert ticket in 1993: $24.05
Average price of concert ticket in 1990: Around $20
Average price of concert ticket in 1987: Around $15
Average price of concert ticket in 1984: Around $13
Average price of concert ticket in 1980: Around $10

Boring Details
Calculating gross through ticket price inflation gives a more accurate estimate than standard inflation calculations since paying $100 for a ticket in 1985 is totally different than paying the same in 2012, not only because of monetary worth (average wages and ticket prices were lower, artists didn't rely on touring as much as they do now etc).
For comparison we get $79 million for the 'Oops!... I Did It Again' tour rather than the $55 million we would have achieved from standard inflation - meaning that even though the increase is greater, recent tours still have a slight advantage. This is because the increase in maximum ticket prices is comparatively higher than the average ticket price increase.
Other notes:
- Since I couldn't find any reliable average ticket prices for 2013, these calculations give an idea of the gross a tour would have, would it have happened in 2012.
- For tours that spanned several years I calculated final gross based on the year that had the most amount of shows.
- Tours which carried on through 2009 have a large error margin because average concert ticket prices didn't drop until late 2009 (although I'm unsure if this was concert or sports tickets).
- Touring receipts are retrieved from the artist's respective receipt thread.
- There is a '~' to signify gross calculated from an estimate of the original gross.
- The Monster Ball spanned 2009-2011 so has the largest error margin, realistically it would be around $250 million.

So a ticket to a Madonna, Janet, or MJ show back in the day was barely $20? Lord.

Ticket price inflation seems more useful than USD value inflation

No it is not. Look at the prices above and think. If it was 2009 we would be saying Beyoncé Experience grossed in fact 70 Millions because tickets prices were less during crisis. Doesn't make sense unless you read it as this is how much the tour would have grossed if it was 2009. But still, is it really true? Wouldn't they still pay the prices even if it would have made more damage to their wallets?
USD value inflation make much more sense.

I like this; it adjusts for the changing music market to accurately present relative popularity of the tours.

Of course it is still all based on assumptions but it makes the grosses easier to compare (which is the purpose of the thread). Using USD inflation the Blond Ambition tour, Madonna's most iconic tour would have grossed around $100 million from 57 shows. Do you really think this makes for better comparisons to recent tours considering it has more than double the average attendance of last year's highest grossing female tour?

No, it's no better than wild guess based on populatity of the artist. You think they would have booked Madonna stadiums with average prices taken from mostly arena tours? These averages are also higly dependable on tourin artists schedule - see Gaga ha power.
