Hey guys! Your girl Latinazza here with a new rate. And we're going back, way back to late 1991.
They were special times. Papa Bush was president of the U.S., there was a war in Kuwait, the country was in the midst of an economic recession, the Internet became available to the public, Emma Roberts was born, Patrick Swayze was the sexiest man alive, and the world of pop music was dominated by the trifecta of Madonna/Janet/Paula. There were also several acts without a much substance (Michael Bolton, Color Me Badd, Bryan Adams) and many low-quality "hair bands." Multi-million selling act Milli Vanilli was going through their debacle. Teen acts like Tiffany, Debbie Gibson, and NKOTB were no longer selling.
Then, out of Seattle came a movement that offered an alternative to what was on the radio. Some of its main influences included punk, new wave, Neil Young, Killing Joke, and Sonic Youth. Wearing flannel shirts, combat boots, and ripped jeans, and playing a form of rock that initially appealed only to college stations, bands like Nirvana, Alice in Chains, and Pearl Jam became the poster children of Grunge and the music landscape was changed for good.
This rate covers the period from late 1991, when Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" moved to the top of the Alternative Charts on 11/23/91 (and made a massive crossover into the pop universe) through 04/02/94, the day when the world lost Kurt Cobain. Included are the forty songs that reached #1 in the Alternative / Modern-Rock Charts during that specific time-frame. They provide a taste of genres such as dream-pop, industrial, college rock, and, of course, grunge.
I have also included ten bonus tracks. Among these are eight songs that peaked at #2 on the alternative charts and managed to cross-over into the Hot 100 (between Nov. 1991 and April 1994), and there are two which went to #1 in pre-grunge 1991 and which are considered post-modern classics (as well as pop crossovers).
Without further ado, here are the songs. Hope that you participate, discover a few new acts, and enjoy the music!

Kind of sad what would've been #1 (R.E.M.'s Losing My Religion) isn't here.
And Beck is my 2nd fave male artist/3rd fave but Loser is so overrated.
I'll do this.
Edit:
Did it have to be 40 songs on the dot? Cause Losing My Religion hit #1 on both those charts.
I had accidentally edited out one line that made it a bit more clear. These are the 40 songs that went to #1 on the alternative charts between November of 1991 and April of 1994 (starting out with the Nirvana single, since that's the first "grunge" song to top the charts all the way till Kurt's death). The R.E.M. song went to #1 earlier in March of '91.
But... I have made a minor revision and added both "Losing My Religion" and "Kiss Them For Me" in the bonus tracks group. I removed two that weren't as "alternative" as everything else on this list
Already signed up for another rate so idk if i'm gonna do this, but I will be listening to some of these if not all.

I shall try and do this, for you bb.
I hope you guys can make it. This is probably going to be one of those rates with a small group of participants, so every ballot will have a big impact
