The Black Eyed Peas to Perform @ Superbowl Half-Time 2011?
Quote:
If the Black Eyed Peas are playing halftime of Super Bowl XLV in February, as has been rumored, the group's will.i.am isn't saying.
"I didn't say we were doing that. You said it," the Peas' helmsman told Billboard.com after being queried before the Dallas Morning News broke a new report, citing an anonymous source, that the group would indeed have the coveted performance spot at Cowboys Stadium. An National Football League spokeswoman said that no announcement has yet been made and that the NFL would not comment until that happens. As to when it will become official, she said, "We don't have any timeline for these things."
The Peas performed at the 2009 NFL kick-off game in Pittsburgh, and will.i.am remixed the Who's "My Generation" for an ad during the Super Bowl XLIV broadcast. It's been reported that the NFL wants to skew younger for the next championship game, after featuring veterans such as Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, Prince and the Who at the last few games.
Speaking speculatively, will.i.am said that the Peas would be honored to get a halftime shot at the Super Bowl. "Alongside those cats, it's like, 'Wow, we're in that company?! Oh, man...' he said. "I can't even explain it...And, y'know, we're Americans. Some of those cats weren't even Americans. I love the Rolling Stones. I love U2. I love the Who. I love Prince...but this would be Americans, and new Americans, this generation. When those cats played the Super Bowl, their songs weren't on the Top 40 at that time. So it's like, wow, our songs are on the radio, and we're in that company. That's a sign that tells us where we can go with our career."
The Peas release their next album, "The Beginning," on Nov. 30; the first single, "The Time (Dirty Bit)," sits at No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 and has topped the U.K. Dance charts. The Peas perform on Sunday's American Music Awards, and will.i.am said the group plans to play stadiums in 2011 "after February."
