Lady Gaga's latest release
Born This Way sold roughly six millions worldwide and was the second best selling album of 2011 behind Adele, but showed less impressive longevity than its total sales and suffered from Top40 radio not eating up some of the singles as much as her past hits. While undoubtedly successful, part of the big sales can be attributed to the hype, which was one of the biggest in Pop history for a reason, deriving from
The Fame (Monster) era. While her power seems to be confirmed by a record-breaking world tour, it won't be easy for Gaga to reach the same level of success without the huge hype which led to the
Born This Way release. Her singles sales have also notably declined: they are still impressive, will they improve or keep declining?
Katy Perry, on the other hand, seems not to have peaked yet.
Teenage Dream, after a huge string of successful singles, has been able to consistently sell for two years, exceeding five millions in worldwide sales and, despite many thinking of her as a 'local' artist, only two of those come from the Unites States: the album is multiplatinum in many countries around the world and has seen commercial success in every continent. Having ammassed a bigger fanbase, it's easy to assume that her next release will be focused on album sales rather than only on sure-fire radio hits: the underperfomance of 'Part Of Me' and
The Complete Confection, which may indicate the general public is growing tired of this kind of commercial approach, along with rumours of a more serious and darker album, make me think this way. Will she be able to reinvent herself and avoid overexposure?
Whose next era is going to be bigger?
