AEG Live Scores Top Honors Promoting Five of Billboard's 10 Highest Grossing Tours of 2008
Capping off an incredible year of success for AEG Live, one of the world's largest producers of live entertainment, leading industry publication Billboard has named five AEG productions in the Top 10 of their Top Tours chart tracking the highest grossing tours of the year. Coming in at #1, Bon Jovi's Lost Highway World Tour grossed $210.6 million and drew more than two million fans across North America and Europe, making the AEG Live produced and promoted tour one of the band's biggest ever in its 25-year career. AEG Live also earned prominent spots on Billboard's Top 10 chart with tours it produced for other smash hit artists, several of which are still underway, including Celine Dion at #5 with $91 million gross; Kenny Chesney at #6 with $86 million; Neil Diamond at #7 with $81.2 million; and the Spice Girls at #8 with $70 million.
The Spice Girls' reunion tour included 17 sold-out concerts at the O2 Arena in London last December-January, making it the highest-grossing international engagement of the year, taking in $33.8 million and drawing more than 250,000 fans. Meanwhile, Celine Dion's multi-night run at her hometown Montreal's Bell Centre also brought in an incredible $23.1 million. Billboard's 2008 Top 10 year-end charts track statistics to rank tours by total gross, based on data reported to Billboard Boxscore from Nov. 14, 2007 through Nov. 11, 2008.
"In 2008, AEG Live has delivered on its six-year trajectory as the 'Avis' of the live entertainment industry. To say that our company 'tries harder' is an understatement, as evidenced by this watershed year," said Randy Phillips, President and CEO of AEG Live. "We began our relationship with Bon Jovi on their wildly popular 'Have A Nice Day Tour' in 2005, and were both lucky and honored when the group chose AEG Live as the promoters of this year's highest-grossing tour, 'Lost Highway.' Repeat performances are the true hallmark of a great company, as evidenced in the remarkable public sales response to Britney Spears' upcoming 2009 world tour. Brit's first major arena tour in 2001-02, ‘The Dream Within a Dream,' actually jump-started AEG Live."
The past year's success has set the stage for AEG Live's presentation of one of the most highly anticipated tours of 2009, "The Circus Starring Britney Spears," the performer's first arena tour in five years. In the days following the singer's tour announcement on Good Morning America, Britney's fans have already purchased more than 400,000 concert tickets in North America alone, while propelling Spears' latest hit album, Circus, to #1. In order to meet the overwhelming rush for tickets, AEG Live immediately added shows in six markets, expanding Spears' tour to now include 44 concerts in North America and London. Across the pond, Spears' Circus-mania has reached a feverish pitch, as six additional dates were just added at London's O2 Arena, with more than 100,000 tickets sold for eight total shows over the 1st weekend of sales.
