“Gone Girl” has overtaken “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” as director David Fincher’s highest-grossing film in the U.S.
Fox’s marital thriller earned $1.8 million on Friday at the box office, increasing its cume to $129.6 million and thereby edging out “Benjamin Button’s” lifetime domestic haul of $127.5 million in just 29 days. Fincher’s “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” is up next with $102.5 million.
The Ben Affleck-starrer is headed for an $8 million weekend, which would raise its total haul to between $135 million and $136 million.
“Gone Girl,” which is based on Gillian Flynn’s hit novel, is the famed director’s third top film worldwide. It’s earned $256.7 million, coming in behind “Benjamin Button’s” $333.9 million and “Seven’s” $327.3 million.
“Gone Girl” also had the best opening of Fincher’s career ($37.5 million), topping “Panic Room,” which launched to $30 million in 2002.
With an 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes (based on 245 votes), the drama is also one of the director’s most critically acclaimed movies. It’s in fourth place after “The Social Network” (96%), “Side by Side” (92%) and “Zodiac” (89%).
In yet another milestone, the adaptation is one of Ben Affleck’s top-grossing starring roles. “Gone Girl” looks to pull ahead of his best picture Oscar winner, “Argo,” which reeled in $136 million Stateside in 2012.
It probably won't pass Benjamin Button's WW total though but it has done incredibly well so far!
This also means good things for its Oscar chances.
