The company also cut a $5 million marketing deal with Jay Z’s Roc Nation in 2013, surrounding the release of the hip-hop star’s Magna Carta Holy Grail album, according to reports. In exchange for a $5 million check, Jay Z provided Samsung 1 million copies of the album to be downloaded on the company’s new Galaxy SIII and other devices.
[This is familiar territory for Samsung, which has shelled out big bucks before to offer a global superstar’s new album at no cost to fans. A few years ago, the tech giant offered one million free downloads of Jay Z’s Magna Carta Holy Grail album to those with a Galaxy-branded phone or tablet. At the time of press, the total number of free downloads that Samsung and Rihanna are offering of ANTI wasn’t available, but for the $25 million that the company reportedly paid to work with the singer, it is surely a fairly high number.

Samsung likely also paid for the copies of the album that the aforementioned download code made free to consumers. The Recording Industry Association was then able to certify Anti as platinum—one million downloads or physical copies sold in the U.S., as opposed to streams—within about 14 hours of its release. This is almost exactly the same chain of events that happened with Jay Z’s Samsung-sponsored Magna Carta Holy Grail, and Rihanna has thanked the company in her tweets about the album’s success thus far.
