What some people lack in the vocal department, they make up for in the performance department and personality department.

Because the nebulous concept of 'pop music' has expanded beyond the original trappings of what constitutes good/enjoyable music.

Talent is also variable. There's production talent, there's vocal talent, there's performing talent, there's dancing talent and more - and with the pop playing field being as chaotic as it is in this day and age (with the internet's proliferation and music industry struggling to maintain a stranglehold over how music is released and consumed), any one of those is enough these days to get a #1 single or elevate an artist to instant fame.

Who's to say what talent should prevail? Katy Perry might not be a vocal powerhouse like Beyonce, but she know's how to put pen to pad. Same with Kesha. And on top of that they have personalities.

Having a wide vocal range is cute and all but it doesn't mean too much to the average person.
Some artists are limited and depend or use studio enhancements but who cares.
You're doing the same thing with a bubble gum pop star that you would do with a great singer.
Everything has to be recorded perfectly in a studio setting and touched up that's the point of vocal engineers.
Vocals on the final track are rarely untouched.

There is as much talent in the industry as there always was.
Just because the talent you're searching for isn't being hand fed to you through radio doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Stop being lazy, go look beyond whatever bubble you're in and you'll find heaps of artists with talent.

Actual talent isn't rare. With the exception of a couple of big names, most of the main pop girls have talent. Actually, people are focusing more on talent which is why Adele, P!nk, and Rihanna are increasingly more successful and former big name artists that lack comparable talent are sort of fading.

I mean now its all about looks who they think can make a bigger hit. Selling albums is no longer as important cus it's so hard to do now. That's why you have the Rihanna's and Chris Browns releasing albums every year cus they are interested in single sales and media attention. Anyway it's all in selling a quick single.
