GRINCH BE GONE!: US Rep. Doug Lamborn has introduced a bill in Congress to protect Christmas scenes and themes in public displays and dialogue
Quote:
Just in time for Christmas, U.S. House Republicans have introduced legislation to save it.
GOP congressmen are studying a bill that would strengthen protections for nativity scenes in public displays and that religious references to God should be protected in public dialogue.
The measure was introduced last week by Rep. Doug Lamborn, a Colorado Republican, and it has been referred to the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.

Nativity scenes like this display in a public area in the town of Greenfield, Mass., could get greater constitutional protection under a bill being studied by congressional Republicans
Quote:
House Resolution 564 cites the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, and states:
'Now, therefore, be it Resolved, That the House of Representatives — (1) recognizes the importance of the symbols and traditions of Christmas; (2) strongly disapproves of attempts to ban references to Christmas; and (3) expresses support for the use of these symbols and traditions by those who celebrate Christmas.'
Lamborn said in a statement that religious expression during the year-end holiday deserves and needs protection under the Constitution.
'Christmas is a wonderful time of year when a majority of Americans take time to remember the humble birth of Jesus Christ on a holy night more than 2,000 years ago. The message of Christmas is one of love, hope, and peace,' Lamborn said.
'It is a message that our country and this world needs more than ever in the midst of ever increasing conflict and chaos.'
Lamborn's statement goes on to attack a 'troubling effort by some in America' to eliminate 'any and all Christmas celebrations and traditions from the public arena.'
