Contemporary R&B is one of the most popular genres of music in the world. Since it was born over three decades ago, the genre has yielded some of the most critically-acclaimed and best-selling albums of all time. Now, you, ATRL, will have the chance to decide which 30 contemporary R&B albums stand out among all others.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE:
We’ll be working with a point system similar to that of Ace Reject’s “ATRL’s 100 Greatest Voices” countdown. Every participant will have 100 points to vote with. In order to get an album on to the countdown, you must award some of your points to that album. The most you may give any album is 50 points, whereas the least you may give any album is 5 points. To allow for variety and to ensure that 30 albums actually make the countdown (  ), you may include up to 20 albums in your ballots (You would have to give each one 5 points). It is imperative that you use ALL 100 of your points, so you may include a minimum of 2 albums in your ballots (both with 50 points). - GENRE
This countdown is for R&B albums and R&B albums only. This countdown is not for albums primarily of other genres with a few R&B tracks on them. This countdown is not for albums of other genres by R&B artists. In order for any given album to count, at least half of its tracks must be classifiable as R&B. I know it can be confusing considering the fact that many of the more popular R&B artists have dabbled heavily in other genres, so I’ll make it a bit clearer. Let’s take Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Rihanna, Missy Elliott, Beyoncé and Drake for example. Albums like Thriller, I’m Your Baby Tonight, Rated R, miss E… so addictive and 4 would be acceptable. Albums like Bad, The Bodyguard soundtrack, LOUD, Under Construction and I Am… Sasha Fierce, however, would not be. I’m no stranger to all the flack Drake gets for “singing” and making too much R&B and not enough Hip Hop. Both Thank Me Later and Take Care are *primarily* Hip Hop albums. I don’t want to see them here. Also, the album may have been released anywhere in the world and it doesn’t matter what the artist’s primary genre is as long as the album itself fits the description I’ve just given. If you are unsure of the genre, get a second opinion (preferably in this thread).
- REVIEW
You MUST write a little blurb (2 sentences at least, paragraph at most.) on why the album you gave the most points is the best R&B album of the last 3 decades. Make them presentable, because should an album make the countdown, I will include my favorite high-score review in the post. If you don’t want me to give out your name in the post, tell me in the same private message you send your ballot to me in. I DO NOT NEED A PARAGRAPH ON EACH ALBUM. JUST THE ONES WITH THE VERY MOST POINTS.
- DATE
I wanted to focus on contemporary R&B with this countdown. This genre is only about three decades old, hence the title of the countdown. All albums must have been released between September 28, 1982 and September 28, 2012.
* I will make an exception for Miguel's "Kaleidoscope Dream", which was released October 2, 2012.
- CORRECTION
If you do your ballot wrong, I’m going to tell you so and send it back to you so you can fix it. I’d really rather not do that, so please do it right the first time.
- VOTER INTEGRITY
PLEASE don’t let stan bias cloud your thought process while you’re submitting. If you know your favorite artist’s album is ****ty, then don’t include it in your ballot. DO NOT include an album in your ballot JUST because your favorite artist made it. DO NOT include an album in your ballot because of how many copies it has sold. DO NOT include an album in your ballot because of how many Shammys it won. DO NOT include an album in your ballot JUST because of how you think the other participants are going to vote.

When putting your ballot together, consider quality ONLY. Vote for the albums you honestly think are the best (let me reiterate) R&B efforts to have been released within the last 3 decades. Please make sure that you have heard in FULL any album you choose to vote for.
- DEADLINE
You must submit your ballots to me in a private message by October 12, 2012. I won’t accept anymore afterward. However, if not enough people participate, I’ll give an extension.
I am pleased with the turnout so far, but I am pushing back the deadline to October 14, 2012.
- EDITS TO YOUR BALLOTS
may be made at any time.
OTHER DETAILS
It will take me about a week to tabulate ballots and get the countdown posts together. Each album on the countdown will be listed with its final tally, its release date, one review (see REVIEW) and my favorite song from it (or its biggest hit if I haven’t heard it). I will be counting down 3 albums daily once we begin, so the countdown will last 10 days if I can get a new post in everyday. Pose any questions about rules or anything else in here please.

does neo-soul count as R&B? most people chategorize neo-soul as R&B but when you look at the ''genres'' section of classic neo-soul albums, there's no mention of R&B
