Inspired by slobro's thread.
Here is a list of songs that have topped the Hot 100 Airplay (Radio Songs) Chart but did not top the Hot 100. The number next to the song represents how long it topped the Airplay chart. I will go back and add the 90s and beyond later on, but here is a working list so far.
Remember, the
Hot 100 Airplay chart is a measure of top-listened songs measured total weekly audience impressions across all formats (pop, adult pop, rhythmic, etc.).
1998
Natalie Imbruglia, "Torn" (11 weeks)**
Goo Goo Dolls, "Iris" (18 weeks)*
Shawn Mullins, "Lullaby" (2 weeks)
* Iris peaked at #9 because it entered the Hot 100 once Billboard allowed airplay-only singles to chart.
** Torn peaked at #42 because it entered the Hot 100 once Billboard allowed airplay-only singles to chart. Once this happened, the song had already reached its peak popularity.
