One thing that I've seen a lot recently from the beyhive is the claim that Rihanna is not feminist. So I went and did a little research and I came across this article on feminism in pop music
http://www.thedailybeast.com/article...feminists.html
Quote:
The assumption that feminism comes in a neat, Xeroxable package is gravely outmoded and vacuous. Beyoncé is as much of a feminist as Rihanna who is as much of a feminist as Lorde who is as much of a feminist as Gaga and Nicki Minaj. To minimize the possibility of pluralism is to do a disservice not only to these women and to their art

And also this one
http://thefeministwire.com/2013/10/rihanna/ which analyses the Pour It Up video
Quote:
Rihanna chooses to ally herself with strippers and dancers in a way that other rappers (including female ones) do not. Riri has no interest in being “one of the boys” because she’s down with the hoes. That is subversive; it’s also pro-queer and deeply feminist
|
Quote:
The language of exploitation that second wave feminists like Wright, O’Connor, and Lennox are using to be “critical” of Rihanna and even Miley Cyrus (and there have been comparisons) denies these women agency in their choice to be ****ty. This critique is tired; **** shaming and *****phobia are antifeminist

I think its fair to say that Rihanna is not exactly a feminist in her speech, she hasnt outright said that she's a feminist or even spoken on the matter, but it's evident in her actions. She might've gone back to Chris after her assault, but that was because of the cycle of abuse. It takes a woman more or less 9 times to leave an abusive relationship, so I wouldn't hold that against her.
Anyway, what are your thoughts? Do you think Rihanna is a feminist? Do you think she's the antithesis? Discuss
