A long time ago, a fellow ATRL member made these comments about the BET Awards.
Quote:
You think having a separate award show for black people is a good idea?
Quote:
Then that's the problem.
At least Latin Awards are about music in another language.
BET is about separation strictly according to color.
Quote:
What's the point of the BETs? Do black people really need their own separate award show? Didn't people fight for integration to avoid that kind of separation?
Do you think the BET Awards are hypocritical and at "pro-segregation" ?
Should it be renamed?
Is it simply a show celebrating urban music?
Why do people have this perception of the awards show?
NO , Im not coming off as racist , but dont you see those award shows with like all white people , also bet is more of a cultural thing for me so...
but BET Awards is not exclusively for black people. It's for urban music in general. There have been many white artists at the BET Awards, including Fergie, Christina Aguilera, Justin Bieber, Eminem etc.
So what about the Country Music Awards? The Latin Grammys (are they completely geared towards non-English music)? The Stellar Awards? The Source Awards (RIP)?
The BET spokesperson said the award show is to honor "Black Music", obviously genres that have been dominated/monopolized by Black acts - R&B, Soul, Rap/Hip-Hop, etc. This is explains why Justin Bieber was nominated, because he made some R&B records.
Until the mainstream awards recognize the people BET does, they are necessary.
There's plenty of non-black artists who aren't recognized anywhere. Also, a lot of the artists that do win awards on BET and not elsewhere aren't really too worthy of recognition on any other award show.
I think it just promotes segregation. I mean, having an award show strictly for r&b/hip-hop music is fine, but to restrict it to only black people is not fair and (whether they want to admit it or not) its racist.
EDIT: Okay, wrong choice of words on my part. And no, I've never watch the BET Awards from start-to-finish, I just tune in for the performances. But to call it "black" music makes it seem like the producers are trying to idolize African Americans as being higher than other races, when in reality we're all equal. Don't get me wrong, I am NOT racist in any way, I just think don't think it should be called "Black Entertainment". I feel like it just promotes segregation.

um white and latino artists are also present at the BET Awards
An award show specifically dedicated to black people only would be racist. The BETs themselves aren't, though I think the name of the ceremony is unnecessary.
Well, let's put it this way. If we had the WET Awards (a show for white people), it would be shut down within minutes because people are so ****ing sensitive when it comes to white pride. I don't care about the BET Awards, and they can do whatever they want, but I just think it's borderline racist.

It's not restricted to blacks tho. Justin Bieber was just on last year, Eminem, Christina Aguilera has been there. It's more about Urban Music.

I don't think BET in general should exist. It just makes other races think "Wow maybe I shouldn't watch that channel". We're all human, race shouldn't matter.

All the more reason for the BET awards and other award shows to exist.
