What went wrong?

By audience, you mean hormonal teen girls.
Really? Didn't surprise me or those who watched with me at all. And well britney was all over the place with her emotions that season so...
Again, really? I knew they weren't going to make it in the industry the moment they performed together for the first time as a group on the show. They were boring/terrible (either one of the two) week after week until they were out.
And the song they released after XFUSA about khloe kardashian....like....who's going to buy that mess.
So back to your question, everything went wrong from the moment they were put together. They tried catering to a market that had all of their attention somewhere else (1d, beiber even the wanted was making splash then, nowhere to be found now) and they didn't even serve anything worth paying attention to. So yeah, the group was a mistake, their material was a mistake.
