The Prismatic Tour - Reviews - Katy slays NZ

Katy Perry’s a genius.
Other pop divas — Britney, Beyonce, Gaga — desperately, obviously scrabble after hype. They do anything, everything to maintain their fame, unaware constant career calculations undermine their aim at icon status. Meanwhile Katy Perry succeeds by being herself.
Oh, I have no idea what the real Katy Perry is like. But the tweens, teens, moms and errant hipsters at her sold-out TD Garden show last night — Perry headlines the Garden again tonight — bought her “girl next door” shtick at premium prices.
Perry can sing. She proved that during her acoustic set at the point of a triangle catwalk belting out “The One that Got Away.”
She can dance. Well, she can bop around in rhythm between her awesome dance crew of a dozen while they swapped day-glow Aztec outfits for Egyptian ensembles for Andrew Lloyd Webber cat costumes.
In a summer that brought Justin Timberlake, Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga to the Garden, Perry’s minimalist-but-adaptable set topped everybody’s — classic laser light and tremendous Cirque du Soleil stunts.
But, c’mon, she’s not a knockout singer or dancer, and set is always secondary to star power. Perry succeeds with a few perfect Top 40 hits and an infectious personality. Midway through the two-hour set, she reminded herself what her fans want from her.
“If I have a crappy day, I tell myself that (my fans) came here to find some joy,” she said to fresh junior high screams. “They came here to find some joy with you.”
So much of that joy came from those perfect hits — 2014 blockbuster “Dark Horse,” a very-Jets-and-Sharks reading of “Hot N Cold,” a “This is How We Do/Last Friday Night” medley and her pinnacle: “Teenage Dream” (the decade’s best pop hook).
But the smashes wouldn’t be enough without Perry to guide her groupies through the party. She’s your typical cool, caring baby sitter, only with a million-watt stage show and enough dress up wigs for a score of Brownie troops.

Katy Perry roared last night. On the first night of her Prismatic World Tour she entertained, thrilled and serenaded - nobody went home unhappy.
Without spoiling the show for the millions that will surely see it there followed two good hours of non stop action, costume changes, trapeze artists, inflatables, props of every kind and shape and despite catching a cold on her stay in Belfast and being a bit under the weather, Perry oozed professionalism.
For a sceptical and cynical aul' fella I was truly impressed. It was good, honest entertainment - it brought pantomime, an explosion of colour and a bit of Californian sunshine to the docklands of Belfast.
No grumbles, no gripes she was worth every penny. Catch her if you can!

The mammoth “Prismatic” world tour, which launched in the U.K. in May and landed for its fourth U.S. date in Atlanta last night, is the definition of pop perfection and solidifies Perry’s perch as the reigning queen of the genre.
Despite these detours into CutesyVille, it’s still sometimes surprising to see so many youngsters in the 10 and under range at a Perry show (it’s not as if she came from a Disney movie, even though she’s as bright-eyed and adorable as any animated princess). Perry walks the very, very fine line between sassy and saucy admirably well.
But this bedazzling production is simultaneously a blast of nonstop entertainment and a testament to her hits parade. It’s a visual marvel, yet the music is never lost.
With “Prismatic,” Perry has designed undoubtedly the show of the summer, and possibly of the year.

No one could ever accuse Katy Perry of doing things by half measures. Just over three years after her last visit, she returned to Nottingham with a stage show that was every bit as breathtakingly elaborate as before.
Having focussed on her most recent album, Prism, for most of the show, Katy returned to some of her older hits for the finale: Teenage Dream, California Gurls, and a showstopping rendition of Firework. Alone on the stage in a voluminous multi-coloured skirt, she twirled beneath the pyrotechnics, singing her heart out, caught up in the moment, and unabashedly lapping up the experience for all it was worth. The triumph was deserved. No one else at the top of their game in contemporary pop is working it as hard as Katy Perry right now; for while Gaga and Bieber might be stumbling, she continues to reign supreme.

Katy leaves her Belfast crowd Roar-ing for more
She came and she conquered. Just like Cleopatra who she dressed up as. Yes, Katy Perry's adventures in Belfast could almost rival the Giro for excitement. Almost.
The show ended with an explosive rendition of Firework. Complete with fireworks and a dress that lit up like Katniss ever deen's in The Hunger Games (in case you haven't read the books or seen the movie, she wore a dress that looked like there was fire when she spun around).
The show is full of bright pretty lights, lots of costumes, is superficially pleasing and technically complicated.
Katy Perry is one California Girl who knows how to entertain.

As far as vocals go, despite the on-stage frenzy, she shone during acoustic versions of The One that Got Away and Thinking of You.
But Katy knows it’s not just about the singing when you’re putting on a show of this size. When she brought a pint of beer onto the stage to share with a fan, the crowd egged her to “down it”... to which she replied: “I’m a lady!” The set list contained all her pop hits including I Kissed a Girl and Hot n Cold as well as many from her new album, Prism.
Her sparkly smash hit Firework closed the show, with (perhaps predictably) a spectacular fireworks display, which truly sent us home with a bang.
Perry’s showmanship and humour was obvious, and while the sets and production were breathtaking, her performance was not overshadowed.

Fans were treated to an excellent mix from the California performer’s setlist with the most colourfully vivid light shows and changes of costume and backdrop imaginable, all accompanied by a troupe of gymnast-fit dancers who variously glowed in neon or gyrated in leather - at one moment some hung from the ceiling while twisting around an iron-shaped structure. It looked perilous, but the wow-factor was incredible.
Perry’s vocals are formidable, and this was even more apparent in her stripped back, acoustic renditions of ‘By the Grace of God’ and ‘The One That Got Away’, during which she also displayed easy ability on guitar and an original way of connecting with her audience - at one point she got down to taking about growing kale and beets in her California garden.
Her vocals were strong and affecting and the obligatory fireworks did go off in timely fashion behind her, as Perry ended what was a hugely enjoyable night of ultra-infectious pop and sophisticated, if slightly overdone, musical extravaganza.
