The best 25 songs of 2016

In last year's best of rate, legend, powerhouse vocalist and writer of many #1s Bonnie McKee took out the #1 spot in my top 50 with her smash power-ballad "Easy."

This year I've decided to just do the best 25 songs of the year, low key due to a lack of flawless songs, but there's a few songs I suspect slayTRL didn't know I was into, a few unknown tracks, and some obvious guesses. Last year with Bombastic, Rebel Heart and Froot dominating - this year none of those artists are eligible, and Katheryn has still failed to deliver KP4, so we'll have to see who picked up the slack.

25. Rise
- Katy Perry

Well here we go, the first song of my top 25! I have never LOVED this song – for Katy Perry, arguably the biggest pop force in the industry (poor other girls), this is not the usual level of lyrical perfection and melodic hooks I’m used to, “heartfelt ballad” or not. Sis could’ve done better, but nonetheless she is serving vocals and I do love that she released it in the wake of the terrible Orlando shoots, and seeing that survivor who had found so much meaning and drew so much from the song on the Ellen show kinda made me remember that this song wasn’t necessarily for me, it was for those who genuinely needed to be picked up off the floor. It’s a great motivational album – and a shame the Olympic deal (promo!) fell through cause she foolishly performed the song at a Hillary event. Bring on KP4 queen!

I liked Rise for a cute bit. The POETRY on it was too much for me to handle though so I stopped listening to it.

24. Work from Home
- Fifth Harmony

Fifth Harmony is definitely a band I have always slept on, and I still do, but I did briefly get awoken when the tugged on my weave with this smash. It may be a Dr Luke production which is disgusting, but like it or not being a disgusting “alleged” rapist and confirmed nasty little man doesn’t mean your talents are diminished unfortunately, and they really came through with what is one of the year’s most catchy bops. Between this lot and Rih, the GP really got told to “work” this year! Britney her impact.

Plus that video, and the MEN that featured.

23. Hold Up
- Beyoncé

I slept on this song FOREVER and then finally the video popped up on youtube where I thought I’d investigate, as most of the Lemonade stuff had been under lock and key for centuries. However finally I realized that not only was this the source of all the iconic cricket-bat gifs, but also a really fantastic song! Not Beyonce finally crafting music I like in 2016 after a career of me ignoring ha (except for a brief love affair I had way back when for “Déjà Vu.” An icon came through in this case!

Ooo I remember this from last year. The food banners r making me hungry again. Hold Up is nice. Katy really tried with Rise but I don't think it's all that bad.

22. Million Reasons
- Lady Gaga

Let’s be real Joanne was not what any of us wanted, but it’s also kinda what we didn’t know we needed – a mellow, fairly chill album with lots of gentle songs to force us rabid fems to find our chill and just peace out. “Million Reasons” is so stunning at this point of writing there’s no video and the single is about to fall of the charts once this little Victoria’s Secret boost wears off, so that video better be here ASAP! It’s a little bit boring, but beautiful nonetheless and could become one of her signature songs if she manages to chart a bit higher. The GP have been here for it so far – and it seems like it’s gonna be the album’s most popular and well known single, so fingers crossed she gets this right! It’s been crazy to see her name all over the place lately, and popping up at Victoria’s Secret, X Factor and soon the Super Bowl. Cray cray! To think other fan bases still pressed about her having her foot on their faves’ neck from 2009-2012 said she was over after ARTPOP. Welp!
