I would say One Direction, Justin Bieber & Katy Perry are manufactured.
I like them but they're all easily marketable and have a pretty good image, all of their songs are made to do well on the charts, although Justin is losing it.
And a manufactured artist is someone who makes dance-pop and can't perform live. They make safe pop music that either talks about having a goof time, love, or a breakup.
No, not ALL artists are like this. But I can name one off the top of my head, but I don't want that WP.
An artist that does things with their image, sound or character for the purpose of selling rather than the purpose of doing what they want to do.

An artist that literally has nothing to do with their music and just lets their label control them, just goes in and sings the songs people have written for them then leaves and hears it a few months later.

Not really, usually the only other writers are either one or two other lyricists and the producer(s).
Spice Girls is the prime example. They were literally formed by PepsiCo.
I don't think this is true. They met at auditions yes, but then left because they didn't like the direction they were being put in, took their music, then hired their own manager who helped them sign to Virgin. They also have writing credits on most of their music.
