I have zero time to make a banner so this will do. In fact I wasn't even going to post anything this year but this is a tradition so I made something quickly. 2016 was in so many ways one of my favorite years. In music I'd define it as a different year compared to the first half of the decade I discovered many new artists and I gave some others a chance. It's a different kind of countdown so wait for it.

Martin Garrix feat. Bebe Rexha
"In the Name of Love"

It took me ages to get into this song. Partly because of my personal bias against these two artists and the fact that I'm not really a fan of generic quick little singles especially when released by millenial fads. I guess I can call this one a guilty pleasure and leave it like that. The chorus is really addictive.

Clean Bandit feat. Sean Paul & Anne-Marie
"Rockabye"

I have to say I am highly disappointed with Clean Bandit's comeback. I find it sort of washed up and uninspired and it really pales in comparison to their old sound. Even so I think this song is worth a mention mainly because of the instrumental. I'm still surprised with its global success, it's good but not THAT great, Real Love deserved all the credit this song is getting.

John Legend
"Love Me Now"

Seems like John Legend has found his niche with this highly cheesy type of songwriting. This song feels like an upbeat version of All of Me in all the right ways it's equally romantic but has a fresh and swinging production to go with it that I really like. Let's see if it works out for him.

Troye Sivan feat. Alessia Cara
"WILD"

This one shouldn't even be in the list in the first place because the original is so much better and it charted high last year. Even so, I decided to include it because I listened to it quite a lot this year given the lack of variety we had in the first few months of 2016. Troye really has potential but I feel like he's wasting it trying to appeal to the Tumblr generation. We'll get to Alessia later.

Lindsey Stirling
"Prism"

I knew who Lindsey was before 2016 but I never really cared about her work because I misjudged her as just another Youtube instant star. This year she released a strong solo effort and I really think it's one of the best albums I heard this year. Prism is a plain instrumental song but it gives you so much life it doesn't even need vocals.

Alabama Shakes
"Don't Wanna Fight"

You have to be in a very specific mood to truly enjoy the magic in this song and the album where it comes from. It's so groovy and euphoric at the same time. Even when they're not really trying to appeal to mainstream audiences I still think this song deserved a video.

The Lumineers
"Angela "

Now I might have an unpopular opinion here but I think this band came back stronger than ever. Their new sound is really not meant for radio so you might not find anything close to Ho Hey in their new album but I love how all of their songs build up so nicely like pieces of a puzzle. Definitely one of the best albums we had this year, if not the best.

Capital Cities
"Vowels"

The big problem about Capital Cities is their lack of a signature sound. Even for a short lived one hit wonder they don't really have anything to stand out from the rest so they're sort of stuck making generic indie pop songs like this one. Not nearly as good as Safe and Sound but it has its charms.

Broods
"Free"

I get this song was supposed to be this band's breakout single but I think they sacrificed way too much of their artistic integrity for it. Sounds like a Taylor Swift reject with a twist, not precisely a bad thing but not so great either. I'll wait and see what they do next.

James Arthur
"Say You Won't Let Go"

I was honestly surprised to see this guy managed to overturn his damaged public image and come back with a hit song. It's not really a groundbreaking song since it sounds exactly like an Ed Sheeran reject (just the route many other WGWG are trying hard to hop on). Still, it's a great song I'll give him that.

Weezer
"King ot the World"

It's been so long since I enjoyed a Weezer song this much. They're a great band with an epic discography but they're way past their prime IMO. This song stands out as one of their best recent efforts, I think they've finally found a way to match their core sound and the current sound in mainstream rock radio.

Well, I'll say this about Broods' latest album: If you weren't a big fan of "Free", you'll probably like the album, because it definitely sounds more like what you'd expect from Broods. Then again, I loved "Free" and thought the album was a bit of a disappointment in comparison. You might like it, though.

Also, if you haven't, you really need to listen to the latest Weezer album. Best they've made in twenty years.
