On Friday, Iggy Azalea canceled her "Great Escape" tour, which had already been rescheduled once. It's not the first time that an artist's tour has been canceled for one reason or another, but in Iggy Azalea's case, it's just the latest controversy in a never-ending stream of public drama. Iggy started off as an interesting (if dubiously authentic) talent backed by T.I., but over the past year, has made headlines more for her dust-ups than her music. How did we get here? Cosmopolitan.com examines the five-year career of Amethyst Amelia Kelly through all its wins and losses. Is this the end of the Iggy era?
August 2011: Iggy releases her debut single for "Pu$$y," a controversial track about exactly what the title suggests. The video goes viral, causing uproar because it featured a child riding a rocking horse while Iggy chanted "*****." It was eventually taken down from YouTube because Iggy uploaded the video without the producer's permission, and to date still isn't on Iggy's official YouTube page.
September 2011: Iggy releases her debut mixtape Ignorant Art, led by a track called "D.R.U.G.S." It uses the same instrumental as Kendrick Lamar's "Look Out for Detox." In the lyrics, Iggy makes a reference to Kendrick's track with the line, "When the relay starts, I'm a runaway slave … master / Shittin' on the past gotta spit it like a pastor."
February 2012: Iggy lands a spot on XXL's coveted Freshman List, becoming the first female artist in history to make the cover. Azealia Banks isn't pleased.
June 2013: Iggy appears on Sway in the Morning with T.I. When asked if she has butt implants, she replies, "It's my flesh. It's my butt." When Sway asks her to freestyle, she struggles and delivers a pre-written verse from an existing song. The Internet has a field day with the idea that Iggy can't freestyle yet calls herself a rapper.
June 2013: Rumors of racism return, as old tweets from Iggy resurface.
September 2013: Iggy is on the cover of Complex. She responds to an indirect question about having previously been challenged for mimicking a Southern hip-hop accent in her music. "If you're mad about it and you're a black person then start a rap career and give it a go, too," she says. "I'm not taking anyone's spot, so make yourself a mixtape. Or maybe if you're black, start singing like a country singer and be a white person. I don't know. Why is it such a big deal? This is the entertainment industry. It's not politics. You should be more concerned about the message, not the voices saying it."
December 2014: As racial tension reaches a boiling point in Ferguson, Missouri, Azealia Banks questions Iggy Azalea's silence
During an interview with New York's Hot 97 that same month, Azealia Banks gets emotional as she charges Iggy Azalea (and Macklemore) with cultural appropriation. While the general consensus was that Azealia was honest and forthright in her convictions, Iggy digs herself into a ditch with her Twitter response
January 2015: In a Vanity Fair interview, Iggy suggests that most of her criticism is derived from her gender. "I think it has 100,000 percent to do with the fact that I have a vagina," she says.
January 2015: Jill Scott and Eve appear on Sway in the Morning, and while they're pretty apathetic about Iggy's career, they do debate what they call her "blaccent," causing a resurgence of that discussion.
January 2015: Steve Madden reveals photos from Iggy's collaboration with the designer. She heads to Twitter, calling it the "most disgusting photo shoot ever."
February 2015: Iggy doesn't win at the Grammys and instead gets tangled in a feud with Papa John's over a deliveryman revealing her phone number. The pizza company doesn't seem too worried about it, so Iggy threatens them with a lawsuit:
March 2015: Iggy pushes back the "Great Escape" tour for the first time, blaming delays in production and saying the tour will kick off in the fall instead. Meanwhile, videos like this surface, where Iggy is rapping in what's referred to as "gibberish."
