Over the course of the last few days I have seen a lot of comments on news stories and even some on ATRL discussing Madonna's relevance or lack there of.

I will never understand how anyone could suggest that Madonna is irrelevant especially when the evidence is so overwhelming that is indeed one of the most relevant people on the planet.

This thread provides such evidence and also serves to explain the definition of what relevant actually means.

One of the biggest arguments for me is that while career's are still being moulded on the very path Madonna paved she will truly never be, irrelevant. Wikipedia provides a pretty good list of artists that have said they are inspired by Madonna. (Note: the list is incomplete)

You'll notice that the incomplete list of people Madonna has influenced does not cotain exclusively music stars, Madonna's relevance transcends her chosen career path.

Still. Some people call her Irrelevant.

It's not just other celebs being influenced by Madonna that make her so relevant though. The haters also play a very big part in it. In 2012 when Madonna embarked on her MDNA tour she superimposed Nazi paraphernalia over Marine Le Penn's head. Before Madonna even performed thousands of Anti Madonna people signed on to youtube to dislike the event without even watching it based on the fact they disliked her and what she stands for.

When she performed her live intimate show in Paris. There were people that had turned up with Signs. The media of course reported that people were unhappy with Madonna's show (more evidence of her relevance) but did anyone ever take the time to think, why would fans whom didn't even know how long the show was going to be or what she was going to perform make offensive signs at home, to bring into a venue.



So now, political activists attend Madonna shows to protest her personal opinions on political leaders.

Madonna's last studio album (MDNA) went to number one in 100 percent of the Itunes stores in under 24 hours both in pre order and when it was released, it was also the most preordered album in itunes history. Was MDNA musically groundbreaking? - No. But after True Blue, Erotica, Like a prayer, Ray of light and confessions on a dance floor Madonna does not have the responsibility of producing musically ground breaking material on every release.

The MDNA tour to support the album was the highest grossing tour of the year and also earned a spot in the highest grossing tours of all time. Still after 30 years Madonna is grossing more than any other female on the planet.

That year she topped Forbes money making list.

I bet you guys didn't know that Malawi had no adoption laws. None, what so ever. If a family wanted to adopt a child that would otherwise die before they were 8 they were unable to do it. Madonna's fight to be able to adopt in Malawi created a precedent. There have now been numerous cases where the courts in Malawi have granted adoption because of Madonna's precedent. Something that is relatively new to Madonna's career is social Media. Madonna currently holds the record as the most mentioned person on twitter with more than 10,000 tweets per second during her superbowl performance. In the year of 2012 Madonna was one of the most talked about people on Facebook. According to facebook themselves. In fact Madonna is the only female singer on the list.

When Madonna walked the red carpet at the grammy's she was a WW trend. (She is quite often btw) and when she appeared on SNL recently she gave that show it's highest ratings it's seen in a long time. Her appearance was for 30 seconds. Madonna was also, a WW trend that night.



Remember, while other people were guests on the show and certainly contributed to the ratings, Madonna was the only one on a WW trend.

So, let's talk about Madonna's latest project that isn't commercial at all. Her human rights project. The secret project revolution. It was free for everyone to download, she used her own money to make it and she is the only artists to release something via a ******* site. other artists have since done this. The downloads for secret project as of October last year had been downloaded 1.2 million times. Read about it here

Madonna's new album is due to be released sometime soon. it will more than likely be another billboard 200 #1 and the lead single will more than likely enter the top ten on the hot 100 extending her lead as the artists with the most hits in the top ten. If it does get to #1 she'll be the oldest artist to have a #1 hit on the hot 100.

The media will call her irrelevant. People on ATRL will call her irrelevant and other fan bases will call her irrelevant, but at the end of the year Madonna will top every list billboard release. she'll top every top grossing tour list. She'll top the money making list released by forbes. She'll set new records on social media and achieve 2 year high ratings, again.

That's the joy of being a Madonna fan. Watching the media + others report how irrelevant she is only to be forced to talk about how she's topped everything whenever she has a project.

I grimace whenever I read a comment saying that "Madonna is irrelevant"

The media just makes it seem she's more relevant than she really is, I haven't heard anyone talk about Madonna sans music forums/blogs since like 2008

If people talk about you, you're relevant.

"Irrelevant", along with "iconic" and "flop" are used too frequently and rarely accurately on here.

However, to play devils advocate, I think people neglect to appreciate that there are varying levels of relevance and simply having a presence isn't inherently positive, desirable or notable. It depends.

There are more GP attending her shows than fans, that's just a fact. You can't tell me selling out MSG multiple nights in a row is strictly all fans. Of course she is relevant to the GP.

If you think she's not relevant to the GP i have to assume you didn't read the thread. I know it's long and probably annoying to read but it does actually disprove what you just said.

Honestly, as a huge fan, I can see that her continued accomplishments don't necessarily make her very relevant. She's successful, but in the US it feels like nobody is really interested in pretty much anything she's doing.
