Govt. says YES is expected to win and thereby legalize gay marriage by a landslide!
Ireland will being their weddings in July at the earliest
-----------------------------------------------
A while back an Irish gay couple sued for the right to marry, but a court determined that it requires a change in Ireland's constitution. To change the constitution a public vote must be held. The Government is for same-sex marriage so they were tasked with picking a date and campaigning for a YES vote.
Ireland is the first nation where the whole country votes on legalizing marriage rather than banning it. The date is set to May 22.
Catholic Church's position? Actually not very loud Due to heinous scandals over the years your average Irishman hates the Church so much that even those who are hesitant to say yes might vote in favor just to spite ha The Church knows this so they said they will stay out of the debate
Polls suggest over 70% of the population is in favor, but turnout may be the deciding factor since other referendums with high support in polls barely passed.
May 12: The NO side's lies about the referendum involving adoption laws are EXPOSED when both the Chairman of the Adoption Department and the Referendum Commission said the vote only has to do with civil marriage recognition
So US Evangelicals are already sticking their noses in, notice the word "pedophile" they're repeatedly using the American English spelling instead of paedophile. These are being mailed all over
I'd be surprised if people didn't pass it. I get that some parts of rural Ireland are still conservative, but really.
Back from banland x
It'll come down to voter turnout if history repeats itself on social issues. For example divorce was slated to pass by a large margin according to polls yet squeaked by 51-49%. The YES side shouldn't take any chances and promote, promote, promote
The ones who wrote the text on the homosexuality flyer above are probably the same people who pushed for Prop 8 ban in California and they want a similar result
And there you have it, NOM has officially made it public that they're poking their nose in Ireland's referendum. Since they will most likely lose at home, they've started a fundraiser for other countries:
Quote:
While we in the US have our eyes on the Supreme Court, the people of Ireland also are keenly engaged in the issue of redefining marriage. Interestingly, advocates for redefining marriage in America told the high Court that it's up to the justices to take this step because "fundamental rights" should not be left to popular vote. Yet in Ireland, same-sex 'marriage' activists have done just that — pushed a national referendum that would redefine marriage. Apparently "principle" is a flexible concept that can be molded to suit the objectives of gay and lesbian activists depending on the circumstances.
In approximately three weeks (May 22nd) the people of Ireland will vote on whether to permit same-sex marriage in their Constitution. The No (i.e. pro-marriage) campaign is receiving significant abuse and needs your help. Just like in campaigns for marriage here in America, slanted public opinion polls become fodder to influence the public and depress supporters of marriage. This is happening in Ireland. If they can manage to pull off a victory, it will be a tremendous boost to the cause of marriage worldwide. Please do what you can to bring awareness to their efforts.
Many local celebrities are already pleading for a yes, the Government itself is for a yes
The Government and all opposing parties, which is probably a first for decades in Irish politics. Every major political party is promoting marriage equality and supporting a yes vote!

Yup that's what I meant The runaway victory for the adoption law
