Signed to Jay-Z's Roc Nation label, Rita Ora is the girl to watch right now. We caught up with the bubbly singer to talk collaborating with DJ Fresh and Tinie Tempah, her forthcoming debut album, find out what her Olympic talent would be and more.
Hey Rita, how are you doing?
I’m great thanks!
We’d expect you to be as after all, ‘You’re Hot Right’ now!
*Laughs*
Are you getting that line a lot now?
No, I love it! It’s such a great song, I love performing it.
DJ Fresh who you collaborated with on that track seemed to have a lot of love for you when we interviewed him. He was very complimentary!
Was he? Oh Fresh! I do love Fresh, he’s a good friend of mine. We always have a lot of fun.
In all seriousness, signed to Jay-Z’s Roc Nation label, you are hot right now and seem to have come out of nowhere! How did you get involved with Jay-Z and has your rise really been as sudden for you?
When I was 18, an A&R introduced me to Jay Brown and Ty Ty Smith who work with Jay-Z. They flew me over to New York and signed me the day after they met me, but it didn’t just happen overnight like that, I was writing for a while and doing gigs in London. I’d had a lot of promises and things about to happen, but then as soon as Roc got interested, then all the labels started to come out of the woodwork!
Some people are fickle like that, aren’t they!
Totally! It was really interesting to see how the buzz increased, but I just stayed with a family that I knew believed in me the first time and that was Roc.
It must be said, your latest single, ‘R.I.P’ featuring Tinie Tempah, is a bit of a tune!
Thank you, it’s a great song, really good fun.
How did the collaboration with Tinie Tempah come about?
I basically asked him!
Well, they say if you don’t ask, you don’t get!
Yeah! We met a few times at concerts before that, the industry is small so everyone knows everyone. I asked if he would be on it and he was like, “yeah man, of course!” It just made the song that extra bit special.
There are some great remixes flying around of ‘R.I.P’ too!
Yes, there’s a great dubstep remix, there’s a great dance remix. I really want Fresh to do a remix. Everyone’s really hyped about this track.
Sure that remix won’t be a problem for you to swing! What can we expect from the rest of the album?
The rest of the album is a whole lot of surprises: it has been 2 years in the making! In the family there are some Roc surprises, a lot of oversea artists, but can’t say who just yet! It’s an exciting time and I’m really looking forward to seeing what people’s reactions will be!
Any word on when your album will be released?
Right now I’m looking at September, but that could change. I just can’t say that my album is done. I keep wanting to write more!
Have you had a lot of creative input into this album?
I have! I mostly write my own stuff and have also done a number of co-writes.
What about touring, live dates - where can people see you?
I’m supporting Cold Play around Europe in June!
Wow, that’s exciting! Are you a Cold Play fan?
Oh, yeah, I have been a huge fan for years. I was lucky enough to meet Chris [Martin] through Jay-Z in the States. I’ve asked him like, millions of times how he did it and he tells me it’s just a lot of hard work! Whenever I see Chris he’s cool and always asks where I’m at.
You’ve also got some festival dates like V Festival lined-up haven’t you?
Yes, can’t wait for that! There will also be a few shows that you’ll get to see via my Facebook and Twitter.
For those not in the know, what is your Twitter?
It’s @ritaora!
Lastly, it’s the Olympics coming up. If you were to win a medal for taking part, what would your chosen sport be?
It would probably be canoeing.
Really, are you actually any good at it?
Yeah, I used to do it in the Girl Scouts all of the time. Loved it, I really enjoy water sports.
Amazing Rita! Wishing you every success with the Cold Play tour and bring on that album!
