On the Charts
Nielsen SoundScan tracks sales data Thursday to Thursday so Drake's top-selling Views album is left out of the equation as it was released Friday, April 29th. His absence gives Beyoncé the advantage. Her Lemonade album (Sony) debuts at No. 1 on the Canadian consumption chart (a hybrid mixing track downloads, streams and album sales) with 33,000 albums sold, 66,000 song sales and 4.4 million audio on-demand streams.
It is the follow-up to her self-titled December 2013 release which topped the charts, selling 35,000 copies. It's the US singer's third number one album. All but one of the 12 songs from Lemonade debut on the Billboard Canadian Hot 100, led by “6 Inch” at 31, “Formation” at 32 and “Hold Up” at 37.
The Prince catalogue continues to do business following his April 21st death. The 2001 compilation Very Best Of Prince (Warner) posted a sales gain, but slips into second place under pressure from Beyoncé's big debut. Seven more of his albums are in the consumption top 200 including Purple Rain, Ultimate and The Hits/The B-Sides which are all in the Top 20.
The late singer has an incredible 20 songs in the Top 200, , including five in the top ten--led by “Purple Rain” at No. 2.
Canadian acts The Strumbellas (Six Shooter) and Quebec superstar Richard Sequin debut top 10 on the consumption chart in the week. The Strumbellas' Hope places 3rd with 3,700 sales, and Sequin's Les Horizons Nouveaux (Spectra/Dep) debuts at No. 8 with 3,800 copies sold. The Strumbellas place higher on the chart on the strength of stream counts.
Nielsen Music Director Paul Tuch notes in his weekly chart summary that Drake looks to make a huge splash in the coming week with his new album. The Canadian star holds at No. 1 on the Canadian (sales) Hot 100 and Streaming charts with “One Dance." The same song bounces 25-15 on the Hot 100 Airplay chart.
