CANNES Blue Is the Warmest Color With Adèle Wins Palme d’ Or
Quote:
Cannes — “Blue Is the Warmest Color,” Abdellatif Kechiche’s sweeping and sexually explicit three-hour drama about a French teenage girl’s love affair with another woman, received the Palme d’Or from the jury of the 66th annual Cannes Film Festival on Sunday night. In an unprecedented move, the Steven Spielberg-led jury opted to recognize actresses Adele Exarchopoulos and Lea Seydoux along with the film.
"The jury, headed by Steven Spielberg, took the unusual move of awarding the Palme not just to Kechiche, but also to the film's two stars: Adele Exarchopoulos and Lea Seydoux," the AP reports. "The three clutched each other as they accepted the award, one of cinema's greatest honors."
This was by far the most acclaimed movie from this year's Cannes line up. I was afraid Spielberg would snub it considering its subject matter and lenghty sex scenes, but I'm so happy they made the right choice, sight unseen of course.
For the first time, the two actresses also won the Palme D'or as recognition for their work. Lea Seydoux is already a big star in France but this movie may help her get recognized on a more global scale while everybody is calling Adele Exarchopoulos a star in the making. From the interviews, she seems lovely and I can't wait to see what she does next.
