I go to a very international university and I was talking to a friend from Laos about pop music...she had only moved to Canada a year ago and wasn't familiar with a lot of singers and bands and things that are part of North American pop culture, but she knew Britney. In fact Britney was the first artist from outside that area she was exposed to in her 1999/2000 peak, she knew all the words to her big hits and the videos, etc. Beyonce's name never came up.
