This was probably caused by the backlash they got for their album though.

Maybe they should just walk into the arena on a different date and just perform for a crowd that isn't there's. It seems fitting after the album release.

Their last tour was the highest grossing tour of all time and they did stadiums and now they can't even sell out arenas

They don't want to get another disease from U2 after Songs of Innocence. Trojan Horses are easier to remove than that damned album.

This isn't surprising to me. More and more fans, (the people who actually would go to the same act over and over again if they had the money) are unable to afford the extremely high priced U2 and Madonna tickets. Instead, only wealthy people can afford them. Most of those wealthy people who bought their tix in the past probably aren't loyal to U2 and Madonna, they just had extra money to spend and the event was convenient to their schedules. Perhaps they are going to see Tony Bennett/Lady Gaga or Taylor Swift this year, because they're acts that they haven't seen before or they are touring during a more convenient time that fits with their schedule/lifestyle.

Also, I can't be the only Madonna fan that's turned off when I see hundreds of non-fans in the good seats ($350+) while I'm in the nose bleed section (yet would saw my arm off for her). I couldn't afford decent seats at the MDNA concert so I didn't even buy tickets at all. (This could explain why U2/Madonna could be far from sold out! I can't be the only one who is in this situation!)

The logical thing to do (in my opinion) would be to lower production costs (spend less on the stage/effects) and lower the prices of tickets. Most importantly, actually give the best seats to real fans. The rich people will still have a good time in mediocre seats because they aren't fans!

That's why they're not selling out. They should go to more cities instead of doing multiple dates in the same ones.
