Forgot to mention that Bruno's image WAS interesting & captivating when he debuted which is why he blew up so quickly. Now Bruno holds that image by the neck & anyone after will look like a knock-off. Charlie is serving second-rate Bruno at the moment, which also might explain why he doesn't feel fresh.
Ed also feels very fresh artistically, which is why he's smashing like crazy. ATRLers might call him boring but if you actually listen to Ed's music, he really knows how to be an artist & express his diverse inspirations in music, incorporating everything from folk to hip hop to alternative to pop & rock pretty seamlessly. Ed is also an incredible lyricist, even better than Bruno in that sense. Bruno is probably the top at the vocal male 2010s chain. As Adele has said, his vocals are out of this world.
Charlie has no stand-out qualities. Voice? Just okay, slightly irritating at times. Lyrics? Underwhelming for the most part. The one thing I'll give as his main strength is melody, but even his melodies are pretty basic on this debut. Even worse, he's just not an overly interesting person & I don't find his interviews to be very likable. Bruno, Ed, & even Sam are pretty likable people. Charlie is awkward & does a little too much talking himself up.
Charlie has potential but needs a lot of work. Seeing how well OCA is doing, the public definitely sees something in him, but if he wants to last with a strong career, a lot has to change. I think it's right that the critics are dragging him right now & most of them are spot-on with their critiques about him. His album is irritatingly vague & faceless.
