Thanks for the support y'all!
The albums list now has 30 albums because I'm a filthy liar who can't count. This three-part set includes all women but don't let my Beyoncé stanning fool you, I'm no feminist. Get into my basic black and white aesthetic for these graphics, tho.
As someone who got into Tune-Yards (you can miss me with the stylized casing of her stage name) her 2011 sophomore effort, whokill, I was excited for her third release and it certainly didn't disappoint. Although it may seem hectic at times, the overproduction ultimately works in Nikki Nack, providing a stream of interesting and unique tracks that holds onto what made her previous efforts so great, while also maintaining its own identity. I'll fault the album for not having a track as strong as "Bizness", but I certainly think this is the better listen as a cohesive work. I'm perched for Garbus' next release, because she only seems to get better!
Let me not play around and act like I don't completely love this album. This album was immediately met with my computer's trash folder upon it's release week, but I came around to it and I'm stanning a biT, Lizzy Grant. The songs string for an hour or so maintaining a slow, sullen mood - and it's not only what Lana does best, it's the only thing she does well. Sometimes the songs' verses tend to run into each other, so I ultimately characterize each song by their wonderful choruses - the euphoric chorus of my personal favorite track, "Shades of Cool", the climactic, guitar-infused chorus of "Cruel World", or the lazily-sung-but-effective chorus of "Brooklyn Baby". It's clear where Lana's strength lies, and the high notes in "Shades of Cool" or the shock factor of "****ed My Way Up to the Top" is enough to keep me coming back for repeat listens.
Following a string of two albums from women who are making improvements from their earlier releases, Ariana strikes in at 28 with the complete opposite. I absolutely love Yours Truly, and while her 2014 release in My Everything wasn't nearly as good, I still enjoyed it! While Ariana's not trying to act like something she's not in songs that belong in Bratz commercials like "Hands on Me", or Igloo-featured lead single "Problem", she's the most tolerable, and damn enjoyable. Mariah Incarnate's strength lie in her wonderful voice, which easily makes the mid-tempos and ballads the strong point of the album, in tracks like "Why Try", title track "My Everything", Harry Styles' written "Just a Little Bit of Your Heart", and this album's inevitable Big Sean duet, "Best Mistake". The short and sweet "Intro" is the album's highlight (curse Spotify for getting rid of it!), as Ariana provides a beautiful vocal display in the minute-and-a-half. The album suffers from structure; but I'm skipping "Hands on Me" in between JALBOYH/"My Everything" and "Problem" in between "Intro" and "One Last Time", anyways, so I can't be too upset.

OCD was saying natch to me not doing this in intervals of five, so let me fix this. Two males in contrast of the earlier update of three women!
I think this is the most recent release I have listed, because J. Cole came HARD with this Q4 album. Certainly one of the highlights of rap this year, J. Cole recovers from his 2013 misstep of Born Sinner with the very emotional, powerful 2014 Forest Hills Drive. The "Intro" packs a punch within the first two minutes, a soothing instrumental that sounds like Frank Ocean should be singing over it, but instead J. Cole raps a powerful-punching verse over it, ending with the repetitive "do you want to be free? Do you want to be happy?" The entire album is narrative rap with actual lyrical substance, that I would dare make comparisons to Kendrick's GGMC. It abstains from two things commonly seen in rap albums as of late - no features, as J. Cole manages a full album of quality all by himself, and nothing really pops out as pandering to what's typical in the rap scene so he could get a quick hit single. It's more artistic and cohesive as an album than a lot of the rap albums we've seen this year, and certainly something I can appreciate!
I'm in the front seat of the PBR&B band-wagon, seeing as last year I was absolutely in love with Solange, Autre Ne Veut, Frank Ocean, Blood Orange, and the likes, and so I immediately fell in love with How to Dress Well and What Is This Heart? when I discovered it this year. Tracks like "Repeat Pleasure" embody these alterna-R&B aspects that I've come to know and love, but still have enough commercial appeal that I'm surprised How to Dress Well has yet to make it to the mainstream. The entire album is extremely simple, but it proves to be effective - his hallowed, high pitched vocals backed by different instrumentals limited to simple piano chords is a recipe for success in each individual track. "Face Again" is so deliciously good, and is ultimately what The Weeknd wishes he was doing! This has become an instant favorite and an artist I'm certainly excited to see and hear more from in the future.

3/5 so far!
I liked Ultraviolence although it took some time. Both HTDWL and J.Cole also had great albums.
I still can't get through a tune-yards song/album but maybe i'll try again? (not likely). And I grew to dislike Ariana's album since most songs lasted about 2 or 3 plays for me before I got tired of them, but your favourites are among my favourites!
