I haven’t introduced myself properly yet. My name is Jade Above, and I make music. I’m writing to you today because I need your help. There’s this little project that has been living inside of my being for a year already, and today, I want to set it free so I can share my dream, my hopes, but also my passion with you.
See there’s this song entitled Icebergs, that I wrote. It’s a song about hope, and I wrote it for a cause that is very dear to my heart: the struggle that gays in the Middle East have to endure everyday. I’m of arab descent, and I came out to my parents at the beginning of this year. It wasn’t an easy thing to do, and I wasn’t expecting their approval at all, and no, I didn’t get it. That’s still not going to stop me from being who I am. I am my music. I intend to take this song to the next level, and I’m sure with your help, I can achieve it. It’s a scream for my community, but it’s also a ROAR (thanks Katy!) for anybody who feels oppressed in its own way.
Why did you choose the image of icebergs for your song?
I chose the image of icebergs because it goes in direct contrast with the desert which is an imagery that is often linked to the arab culture. It also represents the absence of warmth, and it also amplifies the concept of distance.
Who wrote this song?
I wrote, composed and produced this track. A team of producers named The Lost Boys who worked with Miley Cyrus and Trace Cyrus have also contributed a little bit to this track by recording the vocals but also by adding violins at the end of the song. (the end of the song sounds like an outro that is completely different from the beginning of the song).
How much do you need and why do you need that money?
If I did my math correctly, I’ll be needing 750$ to finish the song the way I want it to be.
I need to re-record the vocals, add some middle eastern instrumentation, cover for a Harvey Milk sample that is present at the beginning of the song, but also ensure that the song is correctly mastered and mixed.
Will there be an acoustic version of this song?
Yes, there’ll be. I’ll be covering the expenses of the acoustic version of the track by myself. It’s also going to be available for free.
What exactly do you expect from Icebergs?
I remember when I wrote Icebergs, I instantly felt something inside of me being freed. It’s as if this song is the hymn of who I am, as a person. I think it’s interesting that a song can mean so much to someone. I hope the song can give some hope to people, inspire, but most importantly drive people to be who they are. I often say that people have only seen the tip of the iceberg. I mean it this time
Who are your inspirations?
I love me some Shakira, Lady GaGa, Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake, Beyoncé, Disclosure, Katy Perry and of course, Rihanna.
If you were a famous songwriter, who would you have pitched the song to?
I think I would have sent the song to Leona Lewis, and I would have wrote it an octave higher. I think Leona Lewis has that haunting voice that would suit the song really well.
