Why does everybody try boxing Nicki in?
Everyone want to box her in to be like a normal female rapper. Why can't she just do NICKI MINAJ? ..I swear some other girls tried appealing to the pop crowd but failed. Nicki was successful. Why would she stop doing something she's good at?
Discuss?

Because she's a sell out, and that's all there is. If she was pop from the start,
there wouldn't be an issue. But she pretended to be something she's not...
and then changed later on. No one is here for disingenuous artists.

i'm still trying to find out why a Kim thread turned into another Nicki argument, i did not know ATRL members where like the others
people bash Nicki all the time, damned if she do, damned if she don't.

And that's the exact "boxing in" that the OP is talking about, she doesn't have to stick to one genre if she doesn't want to

You don't build a fanbase, and then create an album for an entirely different fanbase.
That doesn't make any sense. Not only did she not prove herself as a rapper on
"Pink Friday," she did not prove herself as a pop artist, either. She failed on both
accounts because she tried to appeal to two different genres. Prove yourself
in one area, and then you can mature and try new things. That's not what
happened here. Instead, she just turned herself into a joke.

Her album sold 1.6 million in the U.S., so I'm sure she's not worrying about Vin's opinion. ![yoda](images/smilies/images/smilies/yoda.gif)

Because she isn't "doing Nicki Minaj", she's doing bargain bin Wal-Mart Lady Gaga imitation.

One minute we're shading cause some artists get huge hits and don't sell enough albums. Now it's the other way around? Please make this clear to me, how is the latter a problem, especially since most of her singles have been relatively successful, with 3 top 20 and 5 top 30, with another single that was a radio single and the final that's still working its way up the charts. I'm lost. Isn't the ability to sell albums without huge hits a good thing?

You beg the question. I don't expect there to be anything else you'll ever be good for in any Nicki or Gaga thread.

Imma have to defend Vin on that. Beyonce, Britney, and Ke$ha. Two of them Nicki has collabed with on the same track and the other is one that Nicki has mentioned in Girls Fall Like Dominoes.. and well, it's Beyonce. I don't know anyone in the biz that doesn't like her.

Someone posed a question... and I answered it.
If that makes people mad, that's something I can't help them with.
I don't see fans providing a valid argument for Minaj's defense within this thread. All I
see is, "You're shading her," and "Look who he stans for," and "I don't expect there
to be anything else you'll ever be good for in any Nicki or Gaga thread."
That alone speaks volumes.

Everbody wanna try to box me in
Suffocating everytime it locks me in
Painting their own pictures then they crop me in
But I will remain where the top begins.

I said that it's not a bad thing to not have huge hits and sell albums well, tho. Where's my response, sis?

Your appearances in Nicki and Gaga threads, that often have naught to do with their music, altogether speaks volumes. Your disappointed in their music, I'm sure, stems from your despise of them as people which is unfortunate.

Its hard to see a artist hip hop one day and then the next day they're pop.
She didnt even give her hip hop fans time to adjust to her new sound or image. Its like she wanted to cross over and she wanted to cross over
bad.

You know, one thing I've noticed in the black community mostly, when a rapper isn't doing the typical hip hop, gucci mane, tough hardcore music, they become a sell-out. I don't understand how Nicki Minaj is a sellout, just because she decided to be who she truly is.
When she did take the route of being the typical female rapper, she was accused of being a Kim copycat, now that her music has become pop & actually fits her personality, people accuse her of being a sellout. Everyone wants her to live their way, & she won't. Thats really the problem.
Just because someone chooses to take a different route in music than what you're used to, doesn't give you the right to consider them a sellout.
A sell out is someone who chooses to do things specifically for their label & becomes generic. There is no way in hell Nicki Minaj's label are controlling her, if so she would be Nicki from '09. ![:o](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v232/korn0818/ATRLSmilies/redface_zpsfd99364e.gif)

I don't think we shouldn't use the phrase "crossed-over" rather "tapped into that side of her". Like we've seen recently in her features, Nicki hasn't crossed-over completely to anything. She taps into her different styles and gives us versatility. She can do a pop feature, and an urban feature. Likewise, she can make her own rap song, and a pop-influenced song.
