The Best of the Best Week 13: It's Time to Migrate!
I'm so glad you're back Nick - I couldn't do this week without you! Hopefully this week will give all of you a reprieve from election talk! This week has two of the UK's biggest breakthrough artists, and perhaps the biggest missed opportunity for a hit single seen in a long time.
Feist, performing I Feel It All
M.I.A., performing Galang
Mariah Carey, performing Migrate
Weezer, performing Island in the Sun
The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, performing Date with the Night
Lily Allen, performing Littlest Things
I hope everyone remembers how to play? Listen to all six songs, and post your comments in the thread. Then - (and please do it as soon as you've posted your comments) PM me your rankings of the songs. Remember - 6 is the song you liked the most, 1 is the song you liked the least.

I Feel It All - I don't know what it is about her, but she kind of bothers me. Yeah, she's definitely natural, and a breath of fresh air, but something about her voice annoys the hell out of me. That's not to say this song is bad. It's not, at all. Something just annoys me, is all.
Galang - Another case of a total breath of fresh air and naturalness that you don't see often enough nowadays. However, unlike Feist, I love everything about M.I.A., voice included. "Galang" isn't even one of my favorite songs of hers, yet a "middle of the road" song for her is still pretty freaking good. The beat is so simple, but so infectious, and it just implants itself into your brain and DOESN'T let go.
Migrate - Ugh. I can't stand the direction that Mariah has decided to go. It sounds like so many other songs, and, actually, it sounds even more boring and lazy than the other songs of its ilk. This is a pretty strong week, and songs like these will not get it done this week.
Island in the Sun - My favorite song in a week of (mostly) great songs. I love this song so much that I would put it on the same pedestal as I do The Blue Album and Pinkerton. Yes, I think it's *that* good, and it's one of a handful of songs that Weezer has put out this decade that is comparable to those two albums. Rivers' vocals are amazing, the music is simple but beautiful, and the lyrics could be interpreted as either sad or happy! What more could you want? This was my #1 Weezer song for a *reason*, guys.
Date with the Night - The best YYYs song, by a mile, and one of the craziest songs I can ever recall hearing. One listen to Karen O's vocals are enough proof of that statement. What's more, it's the COMPLETE OPPOSITE of "Maps", and that is not a bad thing at all. It's just a shame that it's going up against my favorite Weezer song of the decade. Otherwise, it would have, almost certainly, been #1.
Littlest Things - Honestly, this is such a universal song that I can't help but wonder how people could actually dislike this song. Lily's cute vocals are here, of course, but it's much more than that. The music itself is very nice, and the lyrical content is sad and hits home to just about anyone who's ever had a breakup. When this song isn't even one of my top two favorites of the week...I mean, what a freaking tough week.

I don't know any of them, but one. I'll listen to them, and vote later.

No problem! That's what this game is for (ideally) - discovery!
Feist - I Feel It All
Ooh, how jangly! I'm firmly believe that Feist has one of the best voices in the business today - small, but full of wisdom and curiosity and power. She's also a tremendous songwriter, and this song has a lot of what I love about her lyrics. I love the way she examines relationships; it's so disarmingly affectionate. I used to think this song went on a tad too long, but now I love it completely.
M.I.A. - Galang
London calling, speak the slang - boys say what what, girls say what what! What I love most about MIA is how all of her songs have a very clear social(ist) bent, but it never gets in the way of the beats? AND WHAT HOT BEATS THESE ARE. Let me tell you, when I saw her love - the call and response at the end got her back on the stage! It was electric! VERY TOUGH WEEK.
Mariah Carey - Migrate
Oh Mariah. Of all the weeks in the world, you had to end up here. I see your point Ryan - Mariah has changed. The Mariah of 1991, or even 1997, wouldn't sing about "accentuating her ****" or speed dialing "RayRay, Shaunte and Maymay." BUT YOU JUST HAVE TO GO ALONG WITH IT? And I love the sendup of her whistle notes at the beginning. But, really, T-Pain? UGH.
Weezer - Island in the Sun
My favorite Weezer song of the decade, too. Let's call a spade - Rivers Cuomo has been aping Brian Wilson for his whole career. This song is the closest he gets to approaching a Beach Boys masterpiece. The second video had animals too! WHO WILL GET MY 6 POINTS??!?!
The Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Date with the Night
I have to admit it. I like my YYY's in Show Your Bones mode - more reflective, more intimate. But this is total balls to the wall genius, and I have to appreciate it.
Lily Allen - Littlest Things
It's going to be very interesting to see who moves on from this week, as it's the most eclectic we've had so far. Everything's so good! This song really wears it's heart on it's sleeve, doesn't it? I also love the strong female voices we've been hearing. UGH THIS WILL BE HARD. And makes me miss Alright, Still even more.

I completely this. "Island In the Sun" is just amazing, one of the best songs ever IMO. The only thing is, I like "Migrate." Not as much as some of her classic hits, but the song is infectious.
