Why are American pop females sucking so much?
I'm talking about the now people - the present. Maybe I'm asking this question because I've been blinded by the brilliance of Back to Black and Alright, Still (and soon to come - We Are the Pipettes!), but why is it that no American female is making music that stands up to these albums? No one is even attempting to be as raw, or as witty, or as simply amazing as the Brits? (We cannot ignore the Canadians either - Nelly? Feist??!?!? Even Avril!??!?) But it's like American females are not even trying? And when they do try, it's just .... a really horrific example of America? Let me explain by comparing two albums that have similar themes and goals: Back to Basics and Back to Black. These two albums are both supposed to sound like today's music with yesterday's sensibilities, right? Why, then, does one accomplish this task while one miserably fails? I mean, obviously it has something to do with Christina Aguilera's stunning inability to remove her ego and her issues from the recording studio, but I think there's more to it?
American pop women should be a lot braver? And wittier? And if they can't do that, then they should have people like write their ****? There's only one American woman who's doing this (Beyonce), but even she's not matching her U.K. peers? So, like, why is it that no American women can truly be free in how she sings and what she sings about?
DISCUSS.

Because American pop males won't stop swallowing so much.
Well, every female that does well, say, overseas flops here. So maybe some reverse psycholgy?

when it comes to christina, she has obviously received alot of critical praise and respect for back to basics, i love both B2B and B2B ....but they are made from different preferences, christina has this thing going now, next album will be somethin different, amy does her style...and succeeds alot (well produced also, mark ronson did a great job!)....but you must remember that christina after all is a WW superstar, amy is a kind of newcomer and she doesn´t work from the same prefernces as christina....there are alot of examples in the business that support your opinions, but alot has to do with background and status, lily allen is a total newcomer who breaked on myspace, she is one of the new clique that makes their very own music, whitout a big commercial label that pretty much tell their artist what to do and not to do....you can´t just generalise it like that, tho much of your opinions i support.

This is an easy question. It is because American pop females (with extremely few exceptions) have no talent. They are just a pretty face who will sell a lot of records for that. They should have people write stuff for them because obviously they cant do it themselves. Anyway, the conclusion is simple, it is our fault as Americans why our pop singers suck. We are the ones who buy they records, so as long as we keep buying them, they are never going to change.

Because American record companies are trying to make money recruiting "marketable" talents to sell to the masses rather than recruiting genuine talents with a bit of originality.
US record companies prefer looks and charisma over talent and musical ability, thus they can hook up the new pop talent with a variety of professional songwriters and producers to mold them into what is already on existing radio. US record companies are playing it safe rather than take a risk on a talent who offers them something different than what is already on the radio.
Brittan, on the other had, is a bit more open to unique and different talents. There really isn't any old time soul and R&B music on the radio (like Amy Winehouse), 1960's girl groups (like the Pipettes) or reggae/ska infused pop (like Lily Allen). US record companies would not go after unsigned acts like that, but UK record labels will, and it has really paid off. The new UK female pop stars are really adding fresh new music to the scene, as opposed to stale and overplayed styles US artists tend to release. Hopefully US record labels will take notice and not just deliver generic and unoriginal artists like they have been marketing the past few years.

Today, Beyonce and Christina are the 2 defining American female pop stars. I like that Beyonce knows she can't write for **** and has other people do it for her. It's okay though, she's a SINGER. Christina has the pipes, and the unique style.
And as for the others, who else even is there? Gwen Stefani? Fergie? Certainly not impressive with "Wind It Up" and "Fergalicious." Please everyone, use the word "song" loosely here. They are simply talking to a beat, and seriously, anyone can do that.

....obviously i agree
but he´s still right about that britain has some more interesting artists/musicians right now and US is at a low point , fergie has a decent voice when she use it...but the music, yet catchy, is not memorable...and gwen officially can´t sing (yet she performed at american idol, and boosted her sales like hell!....RCA and xtina, what´cha waiting for!?)...and the hiphop is also in a bad state right now....timbaland and danja is the brightly shining exceptions...r&b is ok i guess, with ciara, beyonce, omarion etc.....punk/rock is NOT good right now, every american seems to be embracing this whole annoying EMO-trend, and also nickelback is allowed to dominate the charts.
the indie rock/pop is quite ok, with modest mouse and esp. the fantastic arcade fire album.
i guess the business has its ups and downs, and US is a bit down now

gosh you only know who is Britney Spears
for me most of the british music is better than american.
I prefer Melanie C, Nelly Furtado or Delta Goodrem than american pop females.
LOL! The only american female singers on my iPod are Katharine McPhee and Vanessa Carlton.

AMEN. KWORB SPEAK THE TRUTH.
Anyways, American music isn't that bad. I'm guessing the leading pop stars here are Britney Spears (she's an icon now)/Christina Aguilera/Jessica Simpson/Kelly Clarkson (give her some credit)/Carrie Underwood
I mean we do have some talent. I think Stacie Orrico is great and JoJo has tons of potential.
UK = Rachel Stevens
Sweden = Marie Serneholt
Canada = FeFe Dobson
Japan = Utada
Korea = BoA

Lily Allen doesn't have the pipes, she's no X-Tina,Beyonce,Kelly Clarkson, or even JoJo.
You should have made examples with Amy Winehouse and Joss Stone to represent the British.

I'd say Lily can sing better than Britbot or the Duffster, but I can sing better than them. And I can't sing...I think.
(and I can't stand The Pipettes. Too "cutsey" for their own good)
I agree with that post waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay up that points out that the UK music scene is willing to accept pretty much anything. The US music scene is rather image-focused or stuck in reverse which makes it harder for those who'd want to do original music (in the sense that Top40 raido & urban won't play it 3 times in an hour) to break in.
