For the first time, one "American Idol" replaces another at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart as Adam Lambert**'s "Trespassing" debuts atop the list with 77,000 sold according to Nielsen SoundScan. His arrival bumps last week's leader, Carrie Underwood**'s "Blown Away," down to No. 3 (54,000; down 55%).

It's Lambert's first No. 1 album and is his second major label studio set. It follows 2009's "For Your Entertainment," which debuted and peaked at No. 3 with 198,000 sold in its first week. It was blocked from No. 1 by Susan Boyle**'s "I Dreamed a Dream" (a debut at No. 1 with 701,000) and Andrea Bocelli**'s "My Christmas" at No. 2 (218,000).


"Trespassing's" 77,000 start is the smallest sum at No. 1 on the chart since the tally dated Aug. 20, 2011, when Adele**'s "21" sold 76,000 in its 12th nonconsecutive week atop the list. "Trespassing" has the smallest sales week for a No. 1 debut since Amos Lee**'s "Mission Bell" started in the penthouse with 40,000 on the Feb. 12, 2011 chart.

Lambert is the seventh "American Idol" finalist to reach No. 1, following Kelly Clarkson**, Ruben Studdard**, Clay Aiken**, Underwood, Chris Daughtry (of Daughtry**) and SCOTTY MCCREERY.

Further, as an "Idol" finalist rules the chart for the third straight week, it's the longest that "Idol" has monopolized the No. 1 slot. We've had two-week runs atop the list, but always from a singular album -- like Underwood the past two weeks with "Blown Away."

Right behind Lambert on the Billboard 200 this week is Adele's "21," which holds at No. 2 with 63,000 (down 38%). Norah Jones**' "Little Broken Hearts" is up one rung to No. 4 with 45,000 (down 24%).

Comedy rock duo Tenacious D** (comprised of actors Jack Black and Kyle Glass) debuts at No. 5 with "Rize of the Fenix," selling 44,000. It's the act's highest charting album yet (44,000) after hitting No. 8 in 2006 with "The Pick of Destiny" soundtrack at No. 33 in 2001 with its self-titled debut.

The "Now 42" album is down two slots to No. 6 with 42,000 (down 36%) while Beach House**'s "Bloom" starts at No. 7 with a career-high sales week of 41,000. It's also a new chart high for the act, which had never visited the top 40 with two earlier entries.

At No. 8, the "Glee, the Music: Season Three - The Graduation Album" bows with 39,000. It's the 14th top 10 for the Fox TV ensemble, but it's the lowest sales debut (39,000) for a full-length "Glee" album (not including its live movie soundtrack).

Rounding out the top 10 are Lionel Richie**'s "Tuskegee" (3-9 with 39,000; down 45%) and One Direction**'s "Up All Night" (7-10 with 34,000; down 15%).

Sales are really low, but the summer shouldn't be too bad with some big releases coming.

Something like 210k. It will continue to sell steadily throughout the year. And she's done barely any promo for it. Very impressive.

And did someone really debut at #1 with 40,000 copies sold last year? Music sales really have declined so much.

Singer-Songwriter-Guitarist’s New Album Set to Debut with 225-250k

Columbia Records social media maven and swoon-worthy rock star John Mayer will easily debut at #1 on next week’s chart with his new, critically acclaimed Born and Raised album.

Based on one-day sales from those retailers who haven’t packed it up for the Memorial Day weekend show that the release will sell between 225-250k in first-week sales. It’s his first new studio effort since Battle Studies, which moved 286k units back in Nov. 2009.The new disc is being praised for its winning throwback to the vintage Laurel Canyon sound of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young.

Veteran Dove Award-winning Fair Trade/Columbia Christian act MercyMe’s The Hurt & the Healer should debut with 35-45k in sales.

Dik Hayd/EMI Label Services rock guitar god Slash’s Apocalyptic Love is aiming for sales of 30-35k after his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Guns N’ Roses.

Epic songstress Sara Bareilles’ five-song EP, Once Upon Another Time, is looking at a similar total of 30-35k for a release that has been in iTunes’ Top 10 this week.

Warner Bros. New Zealand performer Kimbra, now known for her vocals in Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know,” is looking at 20-25k for her label debut, Vows, already Top 5 in Australia and her native country.

19/Interscope Idol contestant Haley Reinhart emerges with her well-received debut, Listen Up!, which is on target for 15-20k.

Eighth season Idol winner Kris Allen’s 19/RCA sophomore album, Thank You Camellia, is looking at 15-20k as well after his debut scored 80k out of the box in Nov. ‘09. It’s interesting to note, the contestant he defeated, Adam Lambert, entered at #1 last week with his second album, Trespassing, generating sales of 77k.

Album sales were down 9% vs. last week, down 6% vs. same week last year and down 1.5% year to date.

Track sales were flat vs. last week, up 3% vs. same week last year and up 7% year to date.

TEA sales were down 6% vs. last week, down 3% vs. same week last year and up 1% year to date.

John Mayer has a strong following. His first week sales are always sold to great. His song hasn't made much impact.
