Critics slam racist casting of Scarlett Johansson in movie
Quote:
Anime fans aren't the only ones getting animated over the news that Scarlett Johansson has been cast as the lead in Dreamworks' live-action "Ghost in the Shell."
Critics complain that an East Asian actress should have been tapped to play Japanese cyborg cop Major Motoko Kusanagi in the movie that's based on the iconic 1995 animated sci-fi flick (which itself is based on a manga) instead of a white action star. And there's been enough outrage to spawn an online petition to demand a casting change.
The petition, launched by the advocacy group Care2, is currently nearing its target of 16,000 signatures.
The original film is set in Japan, and the major cast members are Japanese," organizer Julie Rodriguez writes. "So why would the American remake star a white actress? The industry is already unfriendly to [East] Asian actors without roles in major films being changed to exclude them."
Hollywood is dumb....they should follow what the tv studios are doing and casting diverse actors. I mean the top rated shows this year have all been minority driven (Empire, black-ish, Jane the Virgin, and now Fresh Off the boat) that should speak loudly to producers and casting agents.
Don't blame the actors, casters or directors!!! Blame the executives who fund the films. A famous director was quoted saying that he gets half the estimated budget if he casts a lead character with a race other than white.
Because its an American remake. That aint go fly here and nobody will watch it unless its attached to a big name. Get over it lol Its not changing STAY PRESSEDT. Also The director is that dude that did the huntsman so mess maybe they will have some but they wont make the lead anyone besides scarjo unless she leaves gorls

The ratings for Jane the virgin suck tho and it was gonna get canceled up until it won a golden globe lol.

Then why was Jason Momoa cast as Aquaman?
FYI they're not changing the story or the setting, but they probably will now that people are complaining that she's playing a Japanese cop.

Because he was in game of thrones and he is a dude bro. Not that i give a **** tbh i dont like superhero **** and i just like him for how sexxxy i think he is LAWDDTT
So let me get this straight, when they cast the white character "Rue" from The Hunger Games as a black actor, it's progressive!
But when they let a white actor play some anime character it's RACISME RACISME RACISME!
Gimme a break
Yes, because representation is important. For every time something like that happens, 100 white actors are cast for parts originally intended for a POC. It doesn't go both ways.
