Five years ago: Adele began the chart-topping reign that would net her the top song of the 2011 chart year, as "Rolling in the Deep" spent its first of seven weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100.
Adele ascends to her first No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, to be released tomorrow (May 12) on Billboard.com, as "Rolling in the Deep" rises 2-1.
The song concurrently reaches the summit on Digital Songs (2-1), despite a 2% decline to 294,000 copies sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan. "Deep" garners the Hot 100's Airplay Gainer award for a second consecutive week, rising 7-3 on Radio Songs (99 million in audience, up 28%, according to Nielsen BDS).
The soulful song's coronation marks a female artist's first Hot 100 No. 1 since Ke$ha's debut single "TiK ToK" began a nine-week reign the week of Jan. 2, 2010. Prior to "Deep," Adele had charted solely with the No. 21-peaking "Chasing Pavements," from her debut album "19," in 2009.
(Following the bow of "Deep" on the Dec. 25, 2010, Hot 100, Adele has added the album cuts "Someone Like You" (No. 65), "Set Fire to the Rain" (No. 88) and "Turning Tables" (No. 63), all from her sophomore set "21," which commands the Billboard 200 for a seventh frame; Adele is the first female artist to top the Hot 100 and Billboard 200 simultaneously since Ke$ha ("TiK ToK," "Animal," respectively) the week of Jan. 23, 2010).
