Expression in western society? I feel like men are more restricted because they are taught from an early age to bottle up their emotions and that they have to be 'strong.' They can't cry, can't show weakness, etc. So they bottle everything up and then people wonder why men have a 3x higher suicide rate.
(Don't you say men are free to express what they want, while the social norm and peer pressure are always there) Men are usually ridiculed if they display even a slight femininity trait.)
The funny thing about this is men are judged more by other men, and women are judged more by other women. People just love to oppress other people even in the same group.
I'd say it's equal. Like males aren't expected to express feminine traits and female aren't expected to express masculine traits. At least in the US. But then you consider worldwide, I'd say women has slight less overall freedom of expression based on Asia. But I'm not really educated on this subject so what do I know?
Currently women, but at the same time the reasons are sexist towards women and femininity in nature. It's ok for women to act masculine because masculinity is worthy and valued, but a man better not be feminine because if he is, he's lessening his worth.
I'm actually going to say women. Yes, women are slandered for expressing their sexuality but there's this outrage when men have feminine mannerisms or wear female clothing, which is misogynistic in itself.

This is true but the reason men are told not to express their emotions is because emotions are considered feminine and femininity = bad (in society's eyes), and this goes for most things men are shamed for

Girls can wear jeans, and cut their hair short, wear shirts and boots, cause it's ok to be a boy, but for a boy to look like a girl is degrading, cause people think that being a girl is degrading.

if you whole-heartedly believe that men not being able to talk about their feelings is equal in the slightest to the systematic political and social oppression of women throughout history that still endures today in most societies then i feel for you
