Does Meryl lack a true legacy?
After the whole Trump/Meryl fiasco the other day, I realised that Meryl doesn't really have an iconic/remembered in her filmography.
People under 40 don't really know her films unless they're gay and the only film that be counted as remembered that she made this millennium is The Devil Wears Prada, which again only gays use.
On top of this, Katharine Hepburn, who is widely regarded as the best actress of all time, criticised her acting technique.
Quote:
Among modern actresses, Hepburn voiced approval of Melanie Griffith and Julia Roberts, but names Oscar-winner Meryl Streep as her least favourite female film star, saying she was too cerebral and over-reliant on technique.
|
Is this why she doesn't have any iconic films or roles? She kind of gives the same performance in every movie.
Is Hollywood propaganda trying to make a "legend" out of someone who isn't one?

I'll be honest I've never seen Meryl in a film before. Not even a recent one so idk if she's legendary or not.
I've never been a "movie watching person".

I wouldn't go that far, but I do think she lacks a few bulletproof, universal classics. Most of her movies also appeal more to women than men, so...

I'd say The Deer Hunter is iconic.

Yeah the only film of hers that's kind of known by people under 40 is Mamma Mia, but that's mainly for the classic ABBA songs not her

She's like Barbra Streisand. Nobody under 40 is listening, but she has that very regal legend feel to her + has had great longevity.

typical atrler thinks Beyonce will be remembered as a greatest singer of all time. Let me just tell you something sister, Sophies Choice, Silkwood, Kramer vs Kramer, Devil Wears Prada, Mama Mia,... I am glad Meryl doesn't have "iconic moments" gay boys on atrl would remember, cuz all of those moments that are regarded here as iconic are laughable... there is a whole world outside atrl, and trust me Meryl is way more respected and remembered as any of those pathetic lil faves ppl stan for here...

Your lack of knowledge =/= her lack of legacy

Only Julie Andrews and Judy Garland really have a single universally recognized film performance, imo.
With actors it's more about the total body of work, so you can't look at them the way you do with musical acts (ie: "iconic hit single" =/= "iconic film role").

I'm not even going to dignify this with a response.

The only films that I've heard of here are Devil Wears Prada and Mamma Mia, the latter of which is only a big film because it was based on a massive musical that contain some of the biggest songs of all time.

Kramer vs. Kramer
Out of Africa
Sophie's Choice
Postcards from the edge
Death becomes her
The Bridges of Madison County
The Devil Wears Prada
Mamma Mia!
Julie and Julia
are all classic or well-known films.
I honestly think you and most of the people in this thread are extremely misinformed.

The Deer Hunter, Silkwood, Sophie's Choice, Out of Africa, Death Becomes Her, The Bridges of Madison County, The Devil Wears Prada, The Hours, Doubt.
Those are movies of hers i've seen and I think are very memorable. Sophie's Choice, Out of Africa and Devil Wears Prada are iconic.

Sophie's Choice, The Devil Wears Prada, Kramer vs Kramer, heck even Julie & Julia... To suggest Meryl ****ing Streep lacks any true legacy and iconic performances is laughable.

Barbra was my eighth most played artist of 2016 and I'm in my 20s.
But I'm also a gay that has seen 20 Meryl Streep films, so....
