Talking about how times have changed in the music industry, she cites how she lost all of her VMAs to Kelly Clarkson at the VMAs in 2005.

I remember back a few years ago when Kelly Clarkson came out, and I lost all my VMAs to her. I was like, OK, I guess now, times have changed.
Gwen sounds surprised that Kelly won back then, She won best female video and best pop video Did Kelly change the music industry by being so successful that year?
"Back a few years ago when Kelly Clarkson came out, and I lost all my VMA awards to her, I was like, oh okay, I guess the concept's changed. Like, you can be on a talent show and make it in music."
I remember award season that year. Loved Gwen and Kelly but was on the edge of my seat for both the Grammys and VMAs and Kelly pulled THROUGH. I freaked when she swept. Such a tough year especially with Mariah's We Belong Together being Kelly's other competitor.

The video of HG is superior than the song so it makes sense.
I think people are completely misinterpreting what Gwen is saying. She's not being shady.
Yeah. Gwen is saying basically that Kelly proved you could make it in the music industry as a legitimate artist and win VMA's over established artists like herself. I assume she is promoting her gig on The Voice in this interview, which she can thank Kelly for as well.
I don't know she seem to be pressed a bit about it and throwing some shade, but maybe it's just me. But it must be tough when you, as an established star, lost not only VMAs (who cares about VMAs though? Isn't it fan voted?) and also Grammys to some singing competition contestant.
