Germany's 2011 Music Sales

The British singer's album "21" (Indigo) spent 49 weeks in the top 100 rankings and 39 weeks in the top five, going five times platinum after reaching over one million sales. This was researched by the trade magazine "Musikmarkt" in Munich in cooperation with the market research institute Media Control in Baden-Baden.
The annual album charts are dominated by German speaking artists again. In the top 10 veteran-rocker Udo Lindenberg ranked at number two with the album "MTV Unplugged - Live aus dem Hotel Atlantic" (Warner), female singer Helene Fischer came in at number three with "Best Of," "Für einen Tag," with Andrea Berg's "Abenteuer" (Sony) at number four. At number five is rock singer Herbert Grönemeyer with "Schiffsverkehr" (EMI), singer/songwriter Unheilig with "Große Freiheit" (Universal) comes in at number seven and the pop-duo Rosenstolz with "Wir sind am Leben" (Universal) are at number eight.
The other artists on the top ten charts are international artists Bruno Mars with "Doo-Wops & Hooligans" (Warner) at number six, David Guetta's "Nothing But The Beat" (Virgin) at number nine and finally the deceased Amy Winehouse at number 10 with "Lioness: Hidden Treasures" (Universal).
In 2011 the album charts showed a new record for national products with 432 titles at 54.73 percent overall, up from 2010's 375 titles (49 percent). Universal Music Group had the largest percentage with 100 titles (19.4 percent), with Sony Music's 103 titles (14.65 percent), Warner Music Group's 66 titles (8.21 percent), EMI's 28 titles (7.73 percent), and Goodtogo's 24 titles (1.64 percent) following behind.

Altogether, Universal Music Group topped the album charts with 227 titles (32.91 percent), with Sony Music's 179 titles (22.01 percent), Warner Music Group's 149 titles (16.63 percent), EMI's 86 titles (14.48 percent), and Indigo's 26 titles (5.81 percent) following.
But international productions dominated the single charts; at number one is Adele, followed by Bruno Mars, Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez feat. Pitbull, Rihanna, German singer Alexandra Stan, Pitbull, German newcomer Tim Bendzko, idol star Pietro Lombardi and finishing up with Marlon Roudette.

International recordings make up 284 titles in the single charts (58.71 percent), with German recordings accounting for 340 titles (41.29 percent). The five most successful music publishing companies in the singles charts are EMI at 17.35 percent, UMPG with 16.65 percent, Sony/ATV with 12.19 percent, Kobalt at 8.87 percent and Warner/Chappell with 8.03 percent.
Altogether, 435 gold and platinum awards were handed out in 2011 to best-selling albums, singles and music videos as well as sound and video recordings in the kids and comedy genres. The Association of the German Music Industry (BVMI) in Berlin reports today that compared to 2010 the awards increased by about 20 percent. This year, 155 albums received gold or platinum status, a figure dominated by German productions; the highest award went to Unheilig for "Große Freiheit," released in February 2010, which went seven times platinum. Coming in at number two with each going 11 times gold are Herbert Grönemeyer ("Bochum"), released in 2003, Peter Fox ("Stadtaffe"), released in 2008 and Rosenstolz ("Das große Leben"), released in 2011 followed by Adele who whose 2011 album "21" went five times platinum. Album sales are awarded gold status after 100,000 units and platinum status after 200,000 units.
The highest single award in 2011 went to Shakira feat. Freshlyground with "Waka Waka (This Time For Africa)" (Sony), which went five times gold (750,000 copies sold). Shakira won International Pop Artist in 2009 and in 2010 at the Bambi awards. Number one for the Music Video Award is Phil Collins whose "Finally...The First Farewell Tour" (Warner) went 11 times gold. The highest jazz award was achieved by Quadro Nuevo whose album "Grand Voyage" (Soulfood) went platinum. Single sales are given gold status at 150,000 units and platinum status at 300,000 units.
