I really think the pop music monopoly is coming to an end. We will have a very selected few artists who sell a lot occasionally due to hype but the rest will just be indie/one hit wonder artists.

Well, nobody is promoting now though. Not from any genre. In the 90's and 00's, we had heavy, aggressive promo from not only pop, but also r&b, rock and even country artists. The industry doesn't have that kinda money or power anymore and we have to accept that. As for the pop music monopoly, other than its 2008-2012 run, it's been long over and didn't even exist in the golden eras of promo (90's - 00's) for the most part.
