A Missouri bill to require women seeking abortions to get the written, notarized consent of the unborn child’s father is reviving a long-standing argument about men’s rights in abortions.

Pregnancies that are the result of rape or incest are exempted.

Pro-choice groups are livid over the idea that a woman would need “a permission slip” to have an abortion.

But for years, men’s rights organizations have protested the legal double standard that allows women the unilateral power to decide to abort a fetus or to bear the child and get child support payments from the father, whether he is willing or not.

I am extremely passionate about it. Women are the most persecuted portion of the population. No one should have the least say in right of their uterus.

However what about the baby? It's his/her life? But that doesn't matter of course.

What if the pregnancy is a surprise - f.e. condom issues - and both parents were in a consensual sexual relationship and the woman gets pregnant... And the father really wants to have a baby. Total head over heels in love with his unborn child..

Is it right that the woman can terminate the pregnancy without his consent or should men have more legal rights?

I feel like it's easy to say unless you're a man expecting a child. I'd say yes, the father should have a say. Sign a paper, give the father full custody.

If the child is born and the father doesn't want to be around, he'd be expected to pay child support for the next 18 years. Why shouldn't he be able to have a say in if the child should live?

It's not a baby, it's a fetus. It has no rights. It can't think, feel or function. In the early embryonic stages it's nothing but a growing blob, without organs or a sensory capabilities. It's not a person, it's a fetus.

If a man doesn't want this problem he should use a condom and only sleep with people he trusts.
It's easy to just say "give him full custody" but a lot of people would struggle to live their normal life knowing they had a child out there.

Not to argue but I always found that standpoint curious. When does a fetus become a living thing then? 3 months mark? Five months? Six months? Why not moment of conception?

No. Many abortions are for example as a cause of rape, and some even done in secrecy. In the case of rape you don't know who raped you (often), and it would be harder for them to get an abortion. Also, it'll be harder to do it in secrecy when you have to confirm a lot of information and stuff.

If your going to say a fetus has the same rights as a human what about sperm? Eggs? Surely every time a woman doesn't get her monthly egg fertilized or a man's sperm doesn't make a baby that's "murder" too?

Well, it's not too farfetched to think that lot of men would struggle with having their unborn child aborted as well.

And again, condoms aren't foolproof and you can trust a partner whether that be a woman or man and still disagree on whether a pregnancy should be terminated or not.



(BTW I'm pro-choice. But I always found it disturbing how powerless men are in these type of situations. No legal rights what so ever.)
