I first heard What Makes You Beautiful in late September/Early October of last year. I don't live in the UK so I never saw them on X Factor. I don't remember exactly where I first heard of the song in the first place, maybe tumblr? I liked it and was getting excited for Gotta Be You but I lost interest before it came out (so my infatuation only lasted like less then a month lol)
February 2012 - I saw people comparing them to The Wanted (who already had a hit with Glad You Came in the US by this time). Looked up their music, didn't like any of it, thought it was complete fluff. Then I found out their album had a bigger than expected opening in the US.
Fall of 2011, someone posted on Twitter something along the lines of: 'I hate One Direction but What Makes You Beautiful is amazing', so I watched the video on YouTube and loved how catchy the song was and liked how they looked. Then in 2012 they blew up here on the radio and everyone loved them and knew about them especially annoying fan girls.
November 2011, a friend of mine asked me did I think Zayn Malik was cute and I was like "Girl, who is that? " After I found out who they were I gave their music some listens before making an opinion.

I saw it on VFTW (a blog that shades American Idol, X Factor and the like) and I thought they were pandering too hard to teenagers and that the song wasn't even that good.
