Exactly. I think the big thing is that people are coming out of the closet now. It's harder to stereotype all gays as creepy perverted men when men and women of all walks of life are coming out of the closet.
And honestly, video games have done a much better job making sexual orientation "part of a character," rather than the defining trait of a character, than most mass media has. There's a companion in Fallout: New Vegas that you'd never know was gay, it's just kind of cleverly hidden in one of his dialogue trees. That's how it should be.
