Shakira. reviews thread (68@ Metacritic)
Counts for Metacritic

Shakira Shakira (RCA)
Hip-twizzling, Game of Thrones-dressing Colombian pop star Shakira is audio Marmite. To the 60 million people who’ve bought her records she’s a yodelling, lyrical genius. To everyone else she sounds like a strangulated sheep.

The real achievement, though, is that it’s also her most personal effort in years, a reminder that there’s a lot of heart and soul beneath the shiny exterior of her global stardom. On her previous two studio records, Shakira had gone into high-gloss mode, unleashing her inner dance-floor diva on 2009’s “She Wolf” and then into pulsating Latin pop on “Sale el Sol.”
(...)
She sounds at ease and reborn on this new album, proudly addressing the joy of new love from both her child and partner.
(...)
It’s sweet enough to make you forgive the occasional misstep, such as “Medicine,” a trite duet with Blake Shelton, the country star who’s her fellow coach on “The Voice.” Shakira sounds more at home with Rihanna on “Can’t Remember to Forget You,” which bounces to a slinky ska beat.

(...) That doesn't necessarily mean that every cut is cohesive but Shakira is the rare pop star who can pull an album together through sheer force of personality. Whatever the setting, she not only sounds comfortable, she sounds powerful, and that goes a long way toward making Shakira a nice state-of-the-art pop album for America and the rest of the world.

"It's a fickle world," sings Shakira all-too-truly on the exuberant, bubblegum-snappy 'The One Thing'. One of the Colombian star's great attractions in a yes-man pop landscape is her refusal to pander to passing fads. Of course, she doesn't need to - a songwriter since the age of 8, her infectious, emotive blend of Latin and Arabic musical heritages, her peculiar feline yowl and her personal, idiosyncratic lyrics made her a superstar in the Latin American pop world years before her breakthrough into the US and European markets with 2001's Laundry Service.
(...)
Shakira feels like quite a short record after over four years out of the fray, but given that fillered-out overreaching is the downfall of so many pop albums, brevity is a blessing enjoyed by the self-confident. If you're after something cutting-edge that pushes pop forward, you won't find it here, nor will you find, this time around, much in the way of political comment.
Shakira's quite content to dance a deft, concise shimmy over a tightrope of integrity and currency - the fickle world can either shake its hips or sling its hook.

Shakira's self-titled offering sees her releasing new music for the first time in four years. Singles “Cant't Remember to Forget You” and “Empire” suggest a mix of genres well most marketing seems to suggest a return to Shakira's more favourable rock-tinged pop stylings. So of course the opening track “Dare (La La La)” is a straight up dance song to kick off the record with a infuriating backing vocal of, you guessed it, “La la la la la...” and so on. Sure, it's catchy and we'll probably hear it in all the clubs in a few weeks, but lyrically it's uninspiring and on the whole it's nothing we haven't heard before from countless other artists inferior to Shakira. You really feel like she's lowering herself with this one. It feels like attention-grabbing.
(...)
The pace slows down once again for the country stylings of “Broken Record,” an acoustically-driven track that is permeated by these wonderful string elements that provide a melancholic vibe to Shakira's vocal stylings. It's another lovelorn ballad that could have been a total disaster if it weren't for the delivery of Shakira. The track builds really well to its climax with horns and strings taking centre stage. The album closes with two all-Spanish offerings. For those who need to brush up on their language skills, “Nunca Me Acuerdo de Olvidarte” is a Rihanna-less version of lead single “Can't Remember to Forget You,” and actually makes for a more enjoyable listen. “Loca por Ti,” I'm fairly confident, translates to “Crazy For You” and it's another down-tempo number that harkens back to the artist's rock foundations. For the English listeners, it's a pleasant way to close the album because it allows you to focus on what is really this record's greatest attribute – Shakira's voice. For all the genre-hopping on this record it makes a nice change to just be able to take in a soothing, multi-faceted vocal that is simply a pleasure to listen to.

Shakira wields her distinctly tangy voice more playfully on groove-driven tracks such asCan't Remember to Forget You, featuring Rihanna, and the dance-floor-ready Dare (La La La). Hips still don't lie, but Shakira also extols the more settled sense of joy that comes from finding what you were looking for.

(...) The primary rhythmic pulse on “Shakira,” though, is reggae — there’s dubbed-out ska on “Cut Me Deep,” the verses of “Can’t Remember To Forget You” (with Rihanna) sound like early Police, and “You Don’t Care About Me” brings in some echoing surf guitar. She sounds like she’s having fun with all of it.

Shakira’s comfort level seems to ebb and flow throughout the album: She’s commanding on the Spanish-language songs, playful on the bangers, subdued on the songs that are obviously ill-suited for her, such as the Nashville ballad “Medicine,” a collaboration with Blake Shelton, her fellow judge on “The Voice.” It’s one of those duets where two famous people from different genres are joined by their business managers in pursuit of a crossover hit. They sing at each other and both sound as if they’d rather be anywhere else. Shelton, also at half-wattage, treats her with unusual delicacy, as if he was enlisted partly for his hit-making skills and partly to stop her from running away.

I expect this to be critically panned and rightfully so. There's only 1 epic song on this album, i.e. "Chasing Shadows." The others range from plain bad to average and it will be reflected in the reviews. That's just my 2 cents.

I don't think this album will be as critically acclaimed as her others, its a lot more middle of the road and simplistic than the others

MTE. It's still a good album but it's not nearly as creative, quirky, or inventive as any of her previous work (and I mean that in terms of both lyrics and music). Her records are normally way more complex

ufffffff the shadeeeeeeee lmfaooooo well I love my sheep.. never seen her this happy. if it flops hey, at least she gave her fans something no? music journalists are just doing their job. I mean can you guys say press has loved all of your faves work of art? (crickets)
and yes I agree, it is a good album, and may not be as quirky or have that "Shakira mark" latin influence, but I am actually glad she stepped out of her comfort zone.

what kind of professional review is that? only 1 paragraph and only mentions 4 songs? barely no descriptions of the songs. Isn't the "Independent " supposed to be like the NY Times of the UK? mess

Bad review. Not professional at all. I'm going to wait to other reviews.
The album is very eclectic and honest at the same time. Her vocals have improved a lot and the lyrics are better than ever.
