Actually, it's really a good thing. If the CanCon requirement wasn't in place, Canadian artists would starve. There are similar quota laws in Australia and The Philippines, among other countries. But yeah, if not for this, the Canadian Hot 100 would literally be Americanized to the point that it would almost be a copy-paste of the Billboard Hot 100. Classified, Tegan and Sara, Hedley, and Serena Ryder wouldn't stand a chance.
And their success abroad largely depends on them breaking their domestic market. If not for these laws, we wouldn't have had acts like Avril Lavigne and Nelly Furtado breakthrough here in America.
