Historically there has always been an artist that defined a generation of people. Nirvana in the 90s, MJ in the 80s, The Beatles in the 60s, Elvis in the 50s. But it feels like we're missing that artist/band that ties everything together.
And a generation defining artist is equally liked by both sexes, but hated by the previous generation. It doesn't seem like ANY artist right now fits the bill.

Rihanna?
Although many wont admit it, she really is the trendsetter.

I would say our generation's defining artist would have to be someone who can survive without the dying platform of Top 40 radio, so that rules out Rih and Katy
I honestly don't think there's anyone who can be considered THE defining artist of this generation. Pretty much all the contenders have equal impact in different ways, and with the way the music industry has changed, no one artist can be thrust upon the public like they could in the past.
Its an observation I made. Think about every artist that defined a generation, they weren't usually liked by the previous generation (Nirvana, Elvis, etc). And they were liked by both sexes, (MJ's and The Beatles music is universal).
