This year’s list was released on Wednesday morning, and features the usual lineup of First Ladies, socialites, and celebs better known for looking lovely-but-snoozy on the red carpet than for their careers (pretty sure Diane Kruger gave up acting to become a professional Dior gown-wearer).
Of course, there are some bright spots. Amal Clooney gets well-deserved props for her surprisingly edgy evening wear choices, as does Rihanna: Red Carpet Slayer of the century. But in a ranked list, featuring Rihanna — who made a pink loofah look good — below Taylor Swift hurts our hearts.
Aside from a few notable exceptions, Swift is a celeb who always dresses like Taylor Swift. Even her red carpet looks are a spin on her go-to daytime silhouette, the matching crop top and miniskirt combo. This means either a pretty-but-safe silk crop top and ball skirt, or a cocktail dress that shows off her legs (which yes, Taylor, we remember, they’re perfect). Risk-taking is not her forté, looking preppy and poised and perfect is — which is fine, but it doesn’t a best dressed celeb in the world make. (Though given that she covers the magazine’s September issue, Vanity Fair’s basically obligated to place Swift near the top of the list.)
