"Shattering The Meat Myth: Humans Are Natural Vegetarians"
This is an old article from 2009, but I thought it would bring in some interesting discussion:
Quote:
Dr. T. Colin Campbell, professor emeritus at Cornell University and author of The China Study, explains that in fact, we only recently (historically speaking) began eating meat, and that the inclusion of meat in our diet came well after we became who we are today. He explains that "the birth of agriculture only started about 10,000 years ago at a time when it became considerably more convenient to herd animals. This is not nearly as long as the time [that] fashioned our basic biochemical functionality (at least tens of millions of years) and which functionality depends on the nutrient composition of plant-based foods."
Sure, most of us are "behavioral omnivores"--that is, we eat meat, so that defines us as omnivorous. But our evolution and physiology are herbivorous, and ample science proves that when we choose to eat meat, that causes problems, from decreased energy and a need for more sleep up to increased risk for obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.

What do you think? Do you think this is true?

No, humans were hunters/gatherers prior to the rise of agriculture.

Good point. I'm skeptical about this article.

I'm not against people who eat animals, but to say that it's natural to do so is ignorance. Reasons why it's unnatural is backed by scientific facts.
Our hands are not built to kill because they are not strong enough to pierce an animal's skin or break its bones. Our teeth are not strong enough to eat raw meat because it would be elastic and not soft. Our stomach cannot support raw meat, and it would be infected - we would face sooner sickness and death. Even animals who eat animals suffer from diseases, now imagine the effect on our body.
With time, Man has built weapons and cooked their meat so that it's eatable. Both things would not have been possible if we relied on our natural resources - hands, teeth and stomach. Unnatural animal-eating means hunting an animal with a weapon, cook it, then eat it. It's natural for animals, because they can. We cannot.

THIS .
--------
I agree with the article, I believe humans are naturally herbivorous but developed hunting/cooking tactics due to the shortage of available plant material many years ago. It worked then, but we've moved on since then and can live perfectly happy, healthy lives without meat, so we should stop eating it.

Building weapons and cooking our food is part of our nature. We're intelligent enough to do so.
I don't see what makes no sense for vegetarians. We got to this day by hunting and eating other animals for 130k years

This may be true, but I love meat. I'm sorry. I feel bad about it because I'm actually an animal lover, but I've been a meat eater all my life and I'm not giving it up. I think the only way I would become a vegetarian would be if I had to personally kill my own meat.

All you have to do is look at our teeth to see that humans are natural omnivores. We have flat teeth that are normally used to grind vegetables and sharper teeth that are normally used to tear meat.
Do people actually think our ancient ancestors waited six months for some vegetables to grow as opposed to going out and hunting a mammoth for some instant meat?

Probably all of the chemicals and hormones pumped into the meat and dairy we consume. Natural meats and natural dairy do not cause disease.
