On January 6th, 2012, the final installment in one of Disney Channel's most successful franchises, Wizards of Waverly Place will air after 4 years of episodes. The special, titled Who Will Be The Family Wizard?, centers around the final competition between Alex (Selena Gomez), Max (Jake T. Austin) and Justin (David Henrie) to be the wizard in the Russo family that gets to keep their magical powers forever. The special is shaping up to be one of the biggest Disney Channel events of the past several years. See the preview below:
Wizards of Waverly Place is by far the most successful currently-running Disney Channel show and, in addition to winning numerous awards including multiple Emmy Awards, is the longest running Disney Channel Original Series in company history and the Disney show with the most episodes.
Selena mourns the end of the Wizards of Waverly Place and notes the impact it has had on her and her career. Despite this, she is ready to move on and sees the end of the series as an opportunity to move forward with her career. “To be honest, it would probably be when my series ended and not in, like, a happy way, but it was kind of like it was a new chapter in my life."
Now may be a great time to move on. Over the last 12 months, the show has seen the rise of Selena Gomez as the most visible and powerful Disney Channel star since the peak of Miley Cyrus. According to FameCount, Selena Gomez is the 14th most powerful social media celebrity in the world, one spot ahead of Britney Spears. Her weekly social media growth has been on the rise the entire year and continues to rise week-by-week.
With her latest hit, Love You Like A Love Song, mobilizing on the Hot 100 after word-of-mouth spread and the backing of top DJs around the nation, her breakthrough in the pop scene after a string of moderate hits looks plausible. Her presence is known worldwide and her high-profile relationship with Justin Bieber--with whom she recently celebrated 12 months together--is one of the most tabloid-happy relationships in Hollywood.
With a high-profile relationship with arguably the most famous pop star in the world, a close ring of friends that include Taylor Swift, a successful tour, upcoming roles in Thirteen Reasons Why and Spring Breakers and one of the fastest-growing celebrity platforms in the world, it's easy to understand why we should keep our eye on Selena Gomez in 2012. Miley Cyrus is staging a comeback, but it looks like there's a new Disney Queen on the block who she has to get by first.
Don't forget to watch the Disney Channel special event, Who Will Be The Family Wizard? on January 6!
And Wizards is the only Disney show I still have on DVR. Granted, there are like 10 new episodes sitting on my DVR that I haven't watched, but I'll get around to them. That show *****.
EDIT: That was a lie. I also record Good Luck Charlie. I have like 15 new episodes sitting on my DVR too.

This, Disney now has nothing exept GLC. Selena now is moving on to better things though so it's kinda good her show is ending.
This is going to be a really tough and interesting time in Selena's career. Transitioning from Disney Queen and trying to prove that she's more than just a teen star.
She has some pretty serious movie roles lined up for next year and they're all much more mature. I hope things work out well for her!
